Back in '98 we were just hitting our stride shipping delicious U.P. style pasties to all 50 states. Actually, when the Detroit Free Press article about Pasty Central came out that year, we had shipped to all states except one: North Dakota - and we mentioned this in the interview. It wasn't long before we received dozens of orders from North Dakota.
Eric at Toni's in Laurium gave us some pointers in the early days, how to ship pasties by UPS. There is a whole story behind how the packaging, the carriers, and the USDA approval came about. You can hear a little of it (with Real Audio) on the 2000 Summit page.
Also of significance in this picture, the Lutheran Church down the block became a major relay point for serving our wireless broadband up the Keweenaw, in about 2002. You can join their Sunday morning service on the web, as well as hearing archived messages from Pastor Rodney Johnson.
And another side note... that gray '92 Park Avenue parked under the trees - it was donated to Still Waters by the late Rudy Bylkas and his family, and was used for many years to shuttle dozens of residents and thousands of pasties, as we dropped them off for delivery. Just recently the "Rudymobile", as we called it, was retired from service at Still Waters, and sold locally for parts. But I'm sure I've seen it rambling around town recently, perhaps with a new engine?
Don't forget the big Benefit Concert at Calumet Theatre this Saturday at 7pm - music, entertainment, and fun, as we pitch in to help support the areas largest home for the elderly. If you know of someone who would enjoy living at Still Waters (60 years or older, ambulatory), let them know their are rooms available, and no one is ever turned away for lack of finances (thanks to the generous support of folks in the Copper Country).
