walk--he was very unenthusiastic about being

The Snowy Owl made me think to ask this question.I'll ask on this What's Up page which is the best since it isn't realy a Owl question.Is there a Hooters up there? How about a International House Of Pancakes? If well-endowed women work at Hooters, where do one legged women work at? IHOP maybe. Sorry,if it didn't make you laugh. I got a million of them.

Raining here, on the southern shores of Lake Michigan, today...just one of those lazy day, constant drizzle kinda of rains.

In addition to living in the U.P., visiting it, or visiting it
vicariously via this site, another good way to get your U.P. fix is
through reading books about the area. A relatively new author
is Kathleen Hills. She writes mysteries set in the northern part of
the U.P. My wife ( a librarian) just brought me her latest.
Published in 2006, it is called "Witch Cradle." I just began
reading it, but it looks real good. It takes place in the early Joe
McCarthy right-wing hysteria about Communists here, there and
everywhere -- but maybe especially to be looked for in the
Finnish-American community of the U.P. which had so many
Wobblies back in the 1910s. The author says a number of U.P.
Finnish-Americans also went off to a place called Karelia in
Russia in the early 1930s. Is there anything to that? Whatever
the score on that, some of you might want to check with your
local library to see if they have this book or can get it for you.

Happy birthday Judy, never met you but as a fellow birthday sharer, hope you have a great day. Kosk, One year the kids gave me a dog. He was a Yorkie, named Max, afraid of everything. When it rained I would have to go out with him and hold an umbrella over him so he would do his business. I would have to go out with him in the dark also since he was afraid of that also. Now I have this fat cat named Jimmie,who follows me all over the house until I go into my lathe workshop. Soon as the vacuum is turned on he is gone. He runs to the door when my grandson Tim comes over and wont leave his side. This cat is a better dog then Max was. But I still miss old Max.

Really cold and windy here in Minnesota!

Another author who has written an interesting book that partially takes place up in the Keweenaw is Ingrid Hill's book "Ursula, Under". It caught my eye because it takes place between Eagle Harbor and Eagle River, my favorite stomping ground in the summer. There are many fictionalized stories that take place "up there". Just check on your local library website under Michigan Upper Penninsula-Fiction.

Believe it or not, Dr. Nat is a VERY good writer as well, mostly of mysteries and westerns. Problem is, she can't find anyone to publish her; any suggestions?? She has some wonderful ideas for a few mystery novels that take place in the Keweenaw as well.....

Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat, Try the "Writer's Market, Deluxe Edition" Where & How To Sell What You Write. Barnes and Noble sells the book for $50. In addition with this book purchase, you get a year online subscription to Writer's Market. For instance, in this book, pages 112-348 are devoted to the names/addresses of book pulishers :)

Also, Barnes and Noble has an online university...where they offer free onine writing classes, and classes on how to get published.

Another option, for getting a book published, is by self publishing your book. One of the Michigan State Troopers, recently self published a book, so if you need any info on that aspect, let me know, and I'll hook you up with him.

Ok, as if I am not homesick enough as it is for Michigan...sigh. I was driving through town today, wishing how nice it would be to head up to the UP, instead of being stuck here in Indiana. I looked up, and noticed that the car in front of me had Michigan plates on it. I got on the toll road...semi in front of me had Michigan plates. And when I drove back through town, on my way home...the car in front of me had what else...but Michigan plates. I tell ya, it's a sign :)

Mikie, I thought Da Abbi was the only doggie that was afraid of the dark. No joke, when she has to go out at night, I have to turn on the flood light and stand outside with her...and then she is constantly looking up towards the deck, to make sure I am still there. And she hates being in the house when it is completely dark too...I always have to leave a light on for her, when I go to bed.

When we take her camping, we bring a night light along for her...because we all know how dark it gets in those northern woods at night.

Sur5er, Max died a few years ago and we had him cremated. When they sent the ashes to us they put on my wifes name on the box. I put it in the safe and now Dani my daughter keeps telling me to bury Max, because when Precious dies she wont know which box of ashes is her. She will have one in each hand saying is this mom or is this Max? I say just mix them together and don't worry about it mom loved Max and wouldn't mind.

Sur5er. I think it is snowing in Bergland today. 30 degrees and raining at my hunting camp in Ralph. That's enough for me to be glad I'm in the Banana Belt of Milwaukee.

My aunt wrote a book and actually had it published in 2003 when she was 95. That would mean she's turning 98 in August. It's called "Growing-UP in Michigan's Copper Country from 1908-1925". It's actually very interesting. There's a picture of my grandparents on the cover with the 3 little girls they had at the time. There were 11 in all. My dad doesn't get into the book because he was the baby, but I found it interesting. A lot of people probably wouldn't though because it was a lot about what it was like to grow up in that family. I found it very interesting as there was a lot I didn't know about the mills in Freda and such. Anyway, I have an important aunt and if anybody cares to read it, I'll try to find out where you can get it. Her kids are trying to get her to write a sequel. I'd love it if she did but she had a couple of mini-strokes a couple of weeks ago and her sight is impaired. Sad. She's been so healthy her whole life and so vibrant. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.

David, That was great! I really enjoyed it and since my day at work sucked, it really hit the spot.

Mikie, You need to make me some strawberry daiquiris. I just love them. Why should Precious have them all to herself. I like strawberry margueritas too, but tequila makes my mouth too dry (no it doesn't make my clothes fall off for you country music listeners). I can't sleep at night because my mouth just dries out. Bummer too since they're sooooo darn good. Anyway, let me know when we're having them. I have all the stuff here to make them but am really not much of a drinker so only have them when we go out to dinner. I could make an exception though. And like I said, brandy alexanders for dessert. MMMMM HMMMMM

Actually grandma was quite a rascal when she was young! Capt. you must encourage Dr. Nat's endevors to become published. And to Joanne.. I'm so sorry on your loss of a youngster. Those of us who have been there share your heartbreak. The good Lord be with you all.

Deb,I will be making them on Sunday if you are around Berkley stop in.Too bad Kelly is nursing as she loves them, Dani had several at New Years and when she got home she broke a toe walking into a wall. My grandson Tim Ozanich asked his mother where his dads wallet was. Dani said why do you want daddy's wallet? He held up a dollar and said I want more of these. Kenny has been blaming Dani for money missing out of his wallet and now they know where it was going. Aren't grandkids great? By the way Precious bought me about eight shirts, two pairs of shorts, and several pairs of sweats. So much for don't buy anything for my birthday.

Mikie, Now you just came up with a great idea...instead of burying my doggies when they pass on, I will have them cremated...and tell hubby to mix their ashes with mine, when I pass on.
Too funny about Dani thinking daddy's wallet was the ATM/endless money source.

Charles in Adrian, there was a movie on the local PBS station UP here called "Fire and Ice" I think last month. It was about the 1939 Winter War between Finland and Russia. The Russians invaded through Karelia. There was another program about what you mentioned. Russian recruiters came and were looking for lumberjacks and sawmill workers. Sounded real good to a lot and they went. Some were never heard from again and some were interviewed on the program, (can't remember the name of it). Some were in Siberian prisons.

About the Communist Party link with UP Finns,
I know there are books and there were talks
given about this topic at past Finn Fests (I
didn't attend, chose other options instead).

I do remember that my relatives spoke of
Church Finns and Red Finns and that every
time we drove into Houghton along US 41,
one relative or another would point out a
building that was the gathering place of the
Red Finns. I bet there are still oldtimers in the
area who could give you information about
this.

Try the library at the Finnish Center in
Farmington. Someone there is sure to know
more about this topic.

Ms. Katie, You are too funny! My day started out rotten (son has a friend over already, tying up my family room and ablounge) and I came in here to read some of yesterday's posts and saw the Woodpeckers report. That was awesome! Sur5er, Sorry about your rough day with the Michigan license plates. My heart goes out. I know, I see them all the time too. But it's so cold there right now I think I'll stay where I am and hope that it'll be nicer in two weeks when I'm there.

Joanne, My condolences to you. It's hard to lose anybody you love but a youngster is twice as hard. Thankfully it hasn't happened to me, but I worry about my grandchildren all the time. I'll say a prayer for you and your family.

Mikie, If I was in Berkley I'd be right over. How I wish I had you around to cook my meals and mix my daiquiris. What a great combination that would be. Would you adopt me?

Ms. Katie, I know what you mean. We've been trying to get my dad to make a tape of stuff from his childhood. My grandpa was a real pill and he sang some songs that our little virgin ears shouldn't have been able to hear. Never hurt us though. I wish I had the words to all those songs and the only one who remembers them is my dad. I sure wish he'd make a tape. I think I'll buy him some tapes to go along with the combo CD/tape player we bought him a few years ago and see if he'll do that. He's not feeling the best after having a heart attack 3 years ago and there's no time like the present. You're lucky to have those tapes.

All this talk about daiquiris I made some and am enjoying one now. I wonder how they would go with a pasty? I now have to name the new flamingo that is taking roost in my office. He has an eye that follows me around the room. Must not be comfortable since he still is on just one leg. Are they a protected species or am I allowed to keep one here?
