Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 06:06 am:

Michigan Tech student and action reporter Jon Hopper grabbed a scoop for the Pasty Cam back in May of '98 - a fire out near Boston (by the Houghton County Airport). Dry conditions sparked a number of brush fires that year.

A few years later Jonathan would be spending more time at the Airport, where Pasty.NET's wireless network was born in 2001. Michigan Tech's Keweenaw Research Center was ground zero for testing this relatively new technology. It enabled the businesses and organizations in the Airpark to expand their use of the Internet, sending large files at blazing speeds (always careful not to start any new fires :o)

Morning everybody! It's a grand day here in MN. Been out walking the dog and enjoying nature. It's supposed to rain later so I have to enjoy it while I can. Have a great one!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 08:48 am:

good morning all, Up early for me. Bought a new matress and am sleeping like Jack. Mil will be home so you missed your chance to kidnap her and guess what she found at a garage sale in El Paso. It's pink and is flying to Berkley via American and will arrive at 10:41 along with mil. I never should have bought her the laptop, now she knows too much. She bought her ticket herself on Cheap Tickets and did all of her trip herself. Pretty good for eighty some {wont tell me her age} I know she is at least eighty because of Precious age. It is beautiful here this morning, sunny and getting warm.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 10:59 am:

Good morning everyone :) Looks like we will be getting that rain that Usedtobeayooper mentioned... a bit cloudy out today.
And speaking of those darn pink flamingos, Mikie, I went over to my daughter's future in-laws, this past weekend...and guess what my daughter put in their flower garden...pink flamingos...I laughed so hard.
So do you need Beverly and me to kidnap your flamingo now? Maybe we can mate it with one of Ms. Katie's, eh.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:29 am:

I haven't recieved the flamingo yet mil is still at the airport, her nephew who lives with her hasn't picked her up yet. I am getting ready to get my spring haircut. I will have it all sheared off. My kids in laws are all friends with us. At hollidays we all meet at our house. It is nice having an extended family. So when is the big event sur5er? I enjoyed my kids weddings even though they were so expensive.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:31 am:

Charlie,Mary,et. all. A good subject for occasional viewing would be the schools in the area. The regulars, Houghton(old), Hancock, Calumet, Painsdale, LLHS, etc. and then on to others. There's a few in Bootjack, Jacobsvilles', Mohawk, Eagle Harbor and the list goes on.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 01:28 pm:

Here in Texas, it's common for a house to get "flamingo'ed"!!! Basically this is what happens.... Sometime in the night a group of "artists" comes by your house and puts 200-300+ pink plastic flamingo's in your yard, then leaves. When you wake up in the morning, you are greeted by a yard (sometimes trees, vehicles, and the house too!!) full of pink flamingo's. How do I know?? A couple years ago my in-laws neighbor got flamingo'ed during the night. It definitely makes for a busy morning picking up pink flamingo's from your yard, plus, the HOA doesn't really care for your new yard decorations, so they will usually write you a notice...

I can only imagine the horror of someone in the Keweenaw waking up to 300+ plastic flamingo's in their front yard, LOL :-)

By lz (Llamamama) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 01:56 pm:

I am sorry, but I am fond of the plastic pink flamingo's. I too felt like they were "nasty" decor until a residence started having "displays" every week. There was the flamingo volleyball, the flamingo picnic, the flamingo fourth of july, complete with fireworks. Every week a different theme. Sadly they moved. Maybe those flamingos joined the Texas group!? ;o>

There is a house in the Keweenaw that has flamingos all over the house & yard. The owner knew that it would tee someone in the neighborhood off so he purposely did it. He probably got the reaction he wanted. I have one neighbor & she has 12 sled dogs in a fenced in pen( thank goodness) & two house dogs. You don't want to even know what my 1st reaction was. I'm over it now tho it's been 5 years. They really aren't loud, just when it comes to feeding time. (Another thank goodness!!)

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 05:58 pm:

On a sad note, I recieved an forward with a pic of a yard full of those pink flamingos in Florida that have contracted this bird flu.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:21 pm:

JanieT, You are too darn funny. Thanks for my laugh after a rough day at work. Hope Sur5er and Ms. Katie's flamingos are okay.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 08:46 pm:

Hey Deb S. and Janie T. Thank you for your concern for my darlin's, They still are very pink with no sign of illness. Just to be sure they'll be okay, I've quarantined them to my yard. I just hope no intruders in migration to the north, stop and harm my birds. I'm trying to get the hubby to stand watch for me so I can get some rest. But he doesn't share my fasination with these lovely pink treasures. My hope is to some day fill the yard with their lovilyness.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 09:04 pm:

Here in Cedar Rapids, Ia. there is a family's yard that is totally full of pink plastic flamingos! So many of them you cannot see their grass at all! They even have a few of the plastic geese and cranes as well. Our daughter did give me the plastic Mallard family one year for Mother's Day, I treasure them!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 09:09 pm:

Almost forgot, there is a little resturant/bar here in town called "The Flamingo". An old time establishment complete with a pink flamingo on their sign.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 09:46 pm:

Janie, Thank you for the email...that was pretty darn hilarious :) Ms. Katie, Good thing you have quarentined your flamingos...that way Beverly and I won't make the mistake of taking any of the sick ones.

Mikie, The wedding isn't until October 2007...so I have a little bit of time to save up for it...chu ching. Got thinking about my ex mil from hades, and well that whole darn side of the family for that matter...and I was wondering what Ms. Manners would say if I mailed out wedding invites to them with the wrong date on them. Hmmm...it is tempting...and would solve the seating arrangemtnt problem.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 10:27 pm:

My husband used to scuba dive, the members of the club got a flock of flamingos and put them at the bottom of the lake that one member lived on. On Jan.1 they always had an ice dive and liked to see who could find a flamingo and how many were found. Wonder if any are still in the bottom of that lake?

That rain Sur5er talked about earlier still hasn't made it to Mishawaka. It will probably go around us as a lot of the rain has done lately.

Breaking NEWS out of Florida........ the first major outbreak of Bird flu has been reported. I just got the E-mail today

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:16 pm:

sur5er. I wish I had thought of doing that. There were people that had rsvped and didn't show. Cost at least several thousand for them since I had ordered food for them. Most were from the other side that had a divorce in the family. I recieved my flamingo and how do you tell if it is sick or not? Cheapscate brought one that had been out in the sun for quiet some time.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 12:49 am:

Mikie, Oh yeah, this should be interesting with my ex's family ;) Will definately be relying on my police officer's PR conduct at the reception.

How to tell if your pink flamingo is sick: it's believed that the virus is carried by strong winds...so if your flamingo falls over, in the wind, chances are it may have the bird flu ;)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 01:41 am:

Either falling over in the wind or Ms Katie's main squeeze is tired of holding that shotgun on those darn birds and pumped 'em full of lead. I was wondering...when those flamingos fly, where do they put there legs? They have awfully big feet. Maybe they use them to hold up their wings, ya think?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 02:20 am:

Beverly, I don't think they fly...they're shipped in from Tawian. Guess that's the only way they could get them to migrate, eh ;)

I have also noticed that people here, help with the flamingo's migration process....they go to Wallymart, pick out a flamingo or two from the garden section...and then load them into their vehicle and transport them.

Dang, Ms. Katie's an awesome shot, eh. Can we have her on our skeet team?

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 03:53 am:

Man, she's really a good shot...wonder who's yard they all landed in... (Are they born with only one leg to stand on?) Must have been Janie's yard...now they are spreading that Bird Flu everywhere. Just keep them out of California, we have enough trouble at our borders.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 05:16 am:

With aim like that, perhaps the border problems you are experiencing could be solved by Quick Aim Ms. Katie :)

You know, I have wondered the same thing about those flamingos from Tawian...why only one leg. The only thing I can figure out, is that instead of them clipping their wings, to prevent them from flying off the ship during migration, they clip a leg, to prevent them from flying. I mean, any smart flamingo could figure out, that landing is going to be quite rough, with only one leg...thus preventing them from flying off.

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 05:34 am:

Maybe that's what the long neck is for. Hmmmm...strange bird. They use that as a second leg for balance. :)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 05:44 am:

Hmmmm....now we know, eh.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 09:52 am:

having been sent to troll land to be super edjucated I know that the flamingo only stands still on one leg and the other he/she hides under his/her wing depending on if they are left or right legged is where leg and foot go.

By Suzanne Primuth (Suzanneprimuth) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 01:38 pm:

I have seen the flamingo used for the Relay For Life in putting it in a yard and having to pay to have it removed into the yard of your choice. Of course the moneys went to fight cancer. I picked up a toilet bowl and painted it neon pink, then had a sign made to say PLEASE HELP US FLUSH CANCER DOWN THE TOILET. We also have another note taped to the sign that says YOU HAVE JUST BEEN TOILETED!!! We have had a ball moving the toilet from yard to yard and have raised over $180 so far and will be going until June 9th.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 03:42 pm:

Geeze you guys! What a bunch of yooper yahoos you are :> I just now got to check out pasty cam and laughed till I had tears...esp. with Steve's pic of all those poor deceased flamingos. We'll have to be careful or some unsuspecting soul will hear about this and we'll end up on the news, causing a false report of bird flu :O. Isn't it great to have all these like-minded nuts we call yooper friends? Yeee-Haaaaaw
