If you're familiar with Lake Linden and surroundings you'll recognize this spot as the field just outside of town where the carnival used to set up each year. Have no fear folks, it's not being used as a junk yard now, this is just the Schoolcraft Township residents Spring clean up drop off area. It's supposed to be for scrap metal only, but if you take a closer look at the second shot, you'll see the spray painted signs telling folks what they're not supposed to be dropping off there, such as tires, garbage, wood, and TV's. Sure can't be much clearer than spraying a big N-O on a TV right in the middle of the scrap. I can't imagine how much this pile will grow before the cut-off date when the scrap metal company comes and retrieves their haul. Of course there are a few folks that have dropped a couple items off, did a bit of shopping and left with some "new" treasure from the pile! :->

And here I thought the spayed-on messages meant, "No... You can't take these!"

By Pauline (Yooperinpa) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:09 am:

Too Funny! I thought that dumping was not allowed in them thar parts?!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:20 am:

Wow, did we not want stuff or what?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:30 am:

Holy smokes, Mary! When did they start that? I remember the carnival days so well. We couldn't wait for it to come as a kid. Why doesn't it come to Lake Linden anymore? It comes to our town here in MN during the week of the 4th of July. Needless to say, this town is nuts that week. The dirties around are unbelievable. How can they live like that? Oh well, it looks like a great idea anyway.

By John Preisler (Jpreisler) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:47 am:

as long as someone took the door off that refrigerator...

richest man in town is the junk man. he's always got a big wad of
cash in his pocket.

to some kids, a pile of good junk is more fun than the carny
anyway :D

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:52 am:

One man's junk is another man's treasure I suppose...

I think I see that grille I've been looking for, and I might find a good use for those wheels.........

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 08:34 am:

Looks like the Keys after the hurricanes last year.Never saw so many refridgerators (including ours) and other appliances piled up for collection...not really a pretty sight....

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 09:14 am:

A modern day "Sanford and Son", perhaps??

By Kate, CA (Kate) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 10:10 am:

Let's hear it for the recyclers!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 10:50 am:

Dang, couldn't help but wonder: a lot of UP appliances bit the dust over the past year. Must be a lot of clean garages in da CC this week, eh.

By Timothy R. Eskola (Eskola) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:18 am:

Yay!

Recycle, reuse, and don't pollute!

It's good to be sensible with our resources.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:29 am:

Are we humans the only species which despoils our own nests? Seems we spend our first 50 years collecting stuff and the next 50 (ie, remaining) years trying to get rid of it. Most of our lives are spent getting stuff out to use and then putting it away.

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:43 am:

Erica.......did the keys get hit really bad ???? I don't remember much on the news (dish) Did you get any pictures???? I would love to see them if you did????

Now for the junk pile ..... there was a fella there last night loading some stuff into the bid truck trailer.....what a mess.....some stuff left is way before my time.....interesting!!!

Have a wonderful day all.....God Bless you...

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 11:51 am:

By Mel, Kansas (Mehollop) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 02:52 pm:

Boy, I wish the junk piles I see in the woods and along streambanks down here were just temporary until somebody came to haul them off to a proper disposal site.

As I spend more time away from Michigan and the UP, I am more and more thankful that people up there are more appreciative of their environment, and don't litter too much.

Litter is a *huge* problem down here. Folks pull out of the gas station, after being parked right next to a trash can, and throw junk out the window onto the ground. It makes me so angry! The Adopt-a-Highway crews are out every couple of months, and there are piles of bags every hundred feet along side the road waiting for pickup. Two days later, it looks like nobody ever cleaned the place up. Lots of the little ravines along creek banks are filled with scrap metal and old appliances...it's gross.

So a big Thank You to everyone that participates in recycling efforts, returns their pop cans and beer bottles, and resists the temptation to toss trash out the windows of their cars. You make the world a better place!

By John Schneider (Goodhandsman) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 02:53 pm:

Everything but the kitchen sink....Oh wait I think I see the kitchen sink too. lol

p.s I wonder if that lawn mower runs? We could use one at camp.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 07:18 pm:

Mel, You're welcome and I agree. We don't have a huge problem here in MN and the adopt-a-highway crews keep it pretty much under control. I recycle EVERYTHING! My husband calls me Rebecca of Recyclebrook Farm. But if more people would recycle the world would be a better (and cleaner) place to live.

John, I LOVE the "We could use one at camp" lingo. Nobody UP there uses the word "the" after "at". It's hilarious! It's "Let's go Mall", or "Let's go Calumet", etc., etc. I love getting my UP fix on this site.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 02:01 am:

"Nobody UP there uses the word "the" after "at"."

That's probably the Finnish influence ... there are no articles ("the", "a", "an") in Finnish!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 02:15 am:

Neat Fran...thanks for the info. What are you doing up this late? Beverly's up too :)

By clinton drake (Clint) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 06:24 am:

i love lake linden.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 06:38 am:

Hey Usedtobea yooper!

We're going camp next week! (Imagine this
being said with the right accent and
inflection--that's how it sounded in my mind's
ear.)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 07:14 am:

Thanks Fran, I didn't know that. That's cool.

Kosk, You have fun at camp. When we go UP we're going Mall. We'll probably go cemeteries too. I think we'll go Hungarian Falls while we're at it. Wanna come with? (That is NOT a UP phrase. My dad says it's as bad as when they say "I'll do it after". I always say "After What?") Only in da UP, eh:) Anyway, there seem to be no prepositional phrases in the UP. Too funny!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 07:21 am:

By the way, after I asked you if you wanted to come with, your answer was supposed to be "After". Then mine would have been "After What?" You would have said "After While". And on and on it would have gone.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 08:02 am:

....and to think, you folks UP North tease us Southerners (Tennessee, originally) about the way we talk. Well, it may take us longer to say something, but when we're done, at least you know what we're 'tawking' about. LOL ;->

Enjoy all the photos/comments here every morning....thanks for the site, Charles & Mary, and all who are involved.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - 08:02 am:

Usedtobeayooper--

Love it. I remember just plain "Go with" as
well.
