Women on Wheelers... catchy name for this group, who prove that us gals can and WILL do anything to get a Superior view. Taana Kalliainen documented the trip these women made through mud puddles and ditches, while getting stuck and just a bit dirty. They had a little coaching from the guys on the proper way to maneuver their ATV's through the beaver pond and muck, but this group of women rode hard and by the end of the day were covered in just as much mire as the men. For more shots from start to finish, check out Taana's slideshow on the ride out to Wolf Point.

CERTAINLY NICE!!!

By Brent in UPstate NY (Brent) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 06:03 am:

Makes me think of the 'personals ad':

'Seeking single woman 20-35, enjoys outdoor activity, must own truck.
Please respond to Box 952, include picture of truck.'

What a way to initiate spring!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 07:00 am:

Looks like you had fun, Taana...makes me wish that I had been there, to join in on the fun :)

Warning: do not read Brent's post with a mouthful of coffee. I know, sorta late, and you're wiping the coffee off your computer screen, eh. But at least I warned you...and better late then never, eh.
Good one Brent :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:05 am:

Thanks Sur5er, Right on top of things again! Brent's post does come BEFORE yours, you know. But thanks for the warning anyway.

That was a good one Brent. I've always seen it as please include picture of boat, though. Aren't those ads great?

By Taana Kalliainen (Taanarae) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:31 am:

Thanks guys! We had such a blast on this ride. I think we did almost 100 miles total. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, mud and all as that's the best part.

By Tracie K (Tracie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:36 am:

That's my sister! Wish I would have been up there to go wheeling. But then we probably would have fought over who got the machine... ;)

OH ~ Be sure to with Taana a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! (Only a couple days away.)

By Alicia Fachet (Skexie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:44 am:

That looks like great fun! I'm so jealous, being from Chicago, there aren't many places around here you can do THAT!

Glad to see so many women riders...

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:55 am:

Any speculation what the two guys are doing in the woods in the upper right side of the second photo? Recycling beer, perhaps?

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 08:58 am:

Yes! ATV's are a lot of fun! We use ours more than the snowmobiles by far!

By Tracie K (Tracie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 09:26 am:

LOL...that should say WISH Taana a Happy Birthday!

By Shelly Harwood (Shelly) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 10:24 am:

Wow that looks like great fun!! You're never too old to play in the mud!!!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 10:29 am:

Go you women! Thank your honeys for showing you how to get through the mud holes. And, when you have the girls ride, you will know how. What great men you all have!! They enjoyed, I'm sure, giving you "more tools in your back pockets" to have a grand time!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 10:53 am:

Looks like springtime fun. I have to commend Taana and her group of ladies for what appears to be good, clean (or dirty, lol), "responsible" outdoor fun. Too many times all we see are the yahoos driving atv's that probably shouldn't have a drivers license in the first place, which in turn gives everyone a bad rap!! Driving in a safe controlled manner, such as Taana's group, is a lot of fun especially when you can see parts of the countryside where trucks can't go. However, it's when atv's are driven foolishly and irr-responsibly that serious damage occurs, as much or quite possibly more than industry causes.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 04:31 pm:

It looks a bit like a "Jeep Thang".

By Gordon Schmitt (Gordy) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 05:26 pm:

ahhhhhhh, couple more weeks and I will be out there on those trails, hopefully nice and muddy, last year everyone kept telling how muddy the trail to Gay would be and yawn, the machine was for the most part clean yet.
It is tough around the Chicago area to go 4-wheeling, the nearest legal place is about 1 and 1/2 hours away.
Now if I could only figure out where all those women hide that ride ATV's.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 06:45 pm:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Taana!!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 07:10 pm:

I've never ridden an ATV but sure wish we were still riding our Goldwing.Actually I always hoped to ride my own bike. You go girls! Happy birthday Taana when it gets here.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 07:22 pm:

Ms.Katie..one is never too old to learn to ride a motorcycle! I have had my motorcycle license for nearly 20 yrs. now. Learned to ride and owned a Harley til I injured my back and had to have surgery. I have a Honda now, a bit lighter than a Harley, but better for my back without giving up motorcycles altogether. My husband and I put a lot of miles together on the weekends.

By Ruth (Rdrake) on Friday, May 5, 2006 - 11:10 pm:

Pictures are great, I wonder what the beach property owners think of them on the beaches. Not much, I hear. Rdrake

By me myself and i (Totally_me) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 12:05 am:

Why called women on wheelers when the men have to help you through the holes????

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 01:20 am:

Happy Birthday, Taana! :)

Ms. Katie and Bobbysgirl, Glad to hear that I am not the only one who enjoys riding motorcycles. Bobbysgirl, I think that is sooooooooooooo awesome that you drive a motorcycle. I have always wanted to learn how to drive a motorcycle ...and like Ms. Katie I will have to learn one of these days, because it is definately on my list of things to accomplish.
I went along with hubby on a run just north of Milwaukee, a few years ago, and they were having the anniversary celebration at the Harley plant in Milwaukee. Nothing on the highway but miles and miles of Harleys...and definately one of the best traffic jams that hubby and I had ever been in :)

By Bea Neveau (Bea) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 12:51 pm:

Hey now "me myself and i"
We named ourselves "WOW" long before we took this trip with the guys. However this ride was quite an adventure. As a matter of fact this was the first ride we have took with the guys all of our others have been us girls. So if you take offense to that then have at it. But I can tell you we are proud of our name and our wheeling trips we've taken. Besides things can't be the same all the time they would be boring!~"B"~

By Nicole Frantti (Nicolefrantti) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 01:00 pm:

What an awesome day of riding! Thanks for sharing your pictures Taana . . . I didn't have a camera with me. Did I make the "wall of shame"? LOL! ~nicole~

By Bea Neveau (Bea) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 01:30 pm:

By Taana Kalliainen (Taanarae) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 01:33 pm:

Hey there guys! Just to clarify some things. None of us girls got stuck! We were the pros! :) A couple of the guys did have a bit of trouble and they had to get out a chainsaw to move a tree that had fallen but other than that the WOW had no problems. The guys were there to help if needed ;).

Nicole~~You sure did make the Wall of Shame!! Come on down and take a look.

Thanks for the B-Day wishes everybody. It's tomorrow and I'll be the big 31!

By Bea Neveau (Bea) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 01:50 pm:

Go Taana.............. it's your birthday!
You tell em! We gaver! I bet if anyone asked the guys would say we rode like champs!!!!!!!!!! Wasn't that Lake view the best! I can tell you the fire was the best one I'd ever felt! LOL! Aren't you pumped for the 20th?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, May 6, 2006 - 03:23 pm:

Bea, Nicole, Taana, and the rest of the WOW ladies ...you ladies rock :) What a sense of adventure you ladies have...and such a wonderful bond. Hope your group is still around when I eventually move to the UP, cuz my motto is 'live hard, play hard' ;)

By Bea Neveau (Bea) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 02:46 pm:

Good Day All,
Just forgot to tell everyone yesterday no need to spend tons of money on those costly mud facials for us women, we get ours free! LOL! Yes, MUD is a understatement. It rained the first 1 1/2 hrs of our ride. However when we need to be a true ladies we can fill those shoes too. Now we know why we were #10 in the world of places to visit! Beauty is a ride away. I can tell each and everyone of you each trail, woods, and beach front we've been on holds a unique beauty! We are blessed to live here, and be able to enjoy God's country!

By M. B. (Missy) on Sunday, May 7, 2006 - 09:54 pm:

I am an avid woman four wheeler in the Keweenaw. It is one of my passions in life. However, the slideslow made me cringe! Holy Cripe! I sure do not want to be a passenger with some of those riders on an ATV! Sorry! Some (...all) of you need lessons. I hope no one got hurt! Man-o-Man!

By Nicole Frantti (Nicolefrantti) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 10:33 am:

Apparently M.B. (Missy)'s sense of adventure is nothing like ours! There were 32 ATV's and 2 MULES on the ride, and not a single person got hurt, but we were all REAL MUDDY! *note* The only ones with passengers were driving the MULES . . . riding a single person ATV with 2 people would be unsafe.

By Taana Kalliainen (Taanarae) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 11:45 am:

Ok, I wasn't going to reply to M. B.'s comment since Nicole already did, but I felt I had to.

All of the 4-wheelers on the trip (with the exception of the mules) were single passenger wheelers. It is unsafe, not to mention illegal to carry a passenger on a 4-wheeler unless it is designated as a 2-up machine. We were on private land for most of the trip and as you could see from the slideshow there were guys at each hole standing ready to help if needed. We weren't "flying 90 down the trail" as the contitions were pretty muddy and that's not much fun, look what you'd miss. The one way trip out (about 50 miles) pretty much took all day and it was totally worth it. That's what wheelers were made for.

We were invited by the 24 guys (this was their spring ride). It was the first time they had allowed women on their ride and when we got to the destination, they told us we were welcome anytime!

So M.B., if you read this, I invite you on a ride with the WOW anytime. We'll possibly be riding to Copper Harbor from Chassell in the fall, so if you want to join us for some mud (hopefully) and fun, just e-mail me.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 12:01 pm:

Taana, Glad you had fun whis I was young enough to ride with you gals. Never been on a 4 wheeler but owned a Jeep once.Kids all learned to drive it. We were on our family forty acres when a neighbor came over to shoo us off. Mil got all over him for trespassing. He thought he had the right to hunt on our property, boy did Aggie let him know.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 01:54 pm:

M.B., I didn't see anything unsafe being done in any of these slides. If anything, I do believe I would gladly nominate any of the WOW women, to teach ATV riding/safety courses, after watching the slide show of the rough terrain they covered.

By Bea Neveau (Bea) on Monday, May 8, 2006 - 02:32 pm:

Oh Geeez,
Now we are unsafe???!!! For pete sake pretty sure a baby could of crawled faster then most of us went. M.B. are you sure you ride a ATV? You have you been up to Copper Harbor? If you go in the fall you to will be full of mud. As for being unsafe on our trip? NO ONE WAS! Our ride leader and all of the guys were there if needed help. I guess you do not like to get a bit dirty. That is about all that came from that trip! Well, except for our experience of the trip. Everyone of us "WOW" girls said we go in a second if asked again. know why? "cause real women do play in mud puddles"! Atv's are made for mucking and that trip put it to the test. I look at things nothing ventured is nothing gained. If you don't try something how can you say you don't like it? And if you don't like after you've tried don't do it again! Simple as that. We (WOW) LOVED IT!
