Take a quick look back in the Archives, to a year ago (give or take a few days) and you'll see some similar shots to today's photo from John Sturos. Kind of makes you wonder if the calm of the water and air is something that comes about each year around this time and we just haven't noticed that coincidence before. John's shot is a mirror image looking across the canal from the Houghton side to the Ripley side, at the Houghton County Road Commission buildings and the Houghton County Marina. One entity that's just winding down from a busy winter season tending our highways and the other just getting geared up for the active season of boating. The Quincy Mine Shaft just barely makes a double appearance on the extreme right of the photo too! In the full size picture, you can almost see in the windows of the Road Commission office... everyone wave to Pam! :->

Unless there's a storm moving in, it's usually that still first thing in the morning, spring summer or fall.

Hi Pam!!! :-)

Uncle Johnny's niece (Julia)who posted above is getting married this weekend!
Best wishes to a great gal.
From what I've heard, the coldness of the water means less movement.
Beautiful.

By JohnS (Jksturos) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 - 09:52 am:

Thanks, Julia. I guess you have to be in the right spot at the right time.
Hey, Dotsie - I think Julia is counting down too: 79 hours 'til her wedding!

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 - 10:46 am:

Congratulations Julia! Wishing you many years of marriage, rich in love and blessings!

Recognized John's 'reflective photography', right off the bat this morning. Beautiful work, John :) Congrats to you and your fiance', Julia. :)

jpreisler,

The buildings the road commission are in were once part of the Lake Superior Smelting Works, which Quincy contracted with to smelt its copper from 1860 until 1898 when Quincy built their own smelter.

Just looking at BridgeCam makes me realize what a beautiful day it is in the UP. Wish I was UP there...........

I think we probably have many seasons when the canal is so calm it captures a beautiful mirror image. I like to check out the photo properties of pictures to see camera settings and I noticed that John's photo had a capture date of October 28, 2003 and was uploaded on March 25, 2006.

Mary says: Perhaps John hasn't set the date on his camera, since this is the email I had received from him about the pictures in his gallery...indicating to me that these are recent shots.

Hi, Mary. I'm a frequent visitor of pasty.com. I enjoy checking out the photo(s) of the day, and reading people's comments. Recently, I took a few photos overlooking the canal from in front of the UPPCO building in Houghton. I work on the 3rd floor of the UPPCO bldg, at Gundlach Champion, Inc., and couldn't resist running outside to capture the attached photos.

Moi, It's true about less movement meaning colder water. When we're swimming in THE LAKE, when it's extremely wavy, it seems much warmer. We could stay in it for hours then. However, when there isn't any wind the water feels like ice (which it probably is close to). But that is the truth. Something about stirring up the bottom is the reason behind that.

By JohnS (Jksturos) on Thursday, May 4, 2006 - 08:09 am:

To clarify: Yes, the above photo was taken recently. I guess I have to check the date on the camera. Unfortunately, I was heading into work that day, instead of going out to enjoy the beautiful Copper Country outdoors.
Thanks for all the comments regarding the photo.
