Some interesting photos were recently added to the Guest Gallery, by new album owner, John Ponchaud. Taken in Iron River, these three shots represent one lady's dream to adorn her neighborhood with carvings depicting some of the history of the area. She owns several homes and what used to be a baseball field, which she converted to walking paths. After having Joe Rankin carve an eagle as her first yard ornament, she decided to add some more carvings around the path in the field, so they could enhance the experience of strolling the trails. With Joe's help, the designs were chosen, a miner to represent her family's involvement in mining. Then a baseball player, for obvious reasons in a baseball field. Believe it or not, Joe carved all these statues with a chain saw! And if you look closely at the third shot, you can see he's working on another piece, which he tells me is going to contain a number of different animals. If you'd like a closer look at the chain saw carvings, you can do so by clicking on these links to the full size shot of each of them: Top photo, Middle photo, Bottom photo. Enjoy!

I have to mention a special thank you to John (the gallery owner), for his concerted effort to put me in touch with Joe (the artist), who was gracious enough to give me the above information over the phone. Thanks guys! :->

What a terrific UP idea-- a chain-saw wooden baseball walking history park! Congratulations to all involved!

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 12:06 pm:

Pardon my ignorance... what's the HOA?

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 01:00 pm:

Musicteacher---My guess would be "Home Owners Association".

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 03:49 pm:

HOA = Home Owners Association. Or, the associations with way too much power in Texas....

Wow! Wondermous eagle. Did anyone notice the eagle's eye? What a way to solve a 'knotty' problem. Just 'happened' to be in the right place, 'eh? Mmm hmm. What an eye John must have!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 10:25 pm:

Whoops! Should be...what an eye Joe has.
