The last day of April eight years ago... we were digging out from an avalanche of pasty orders, as a result of Kate O'Gorman's report of the project. (Food Editor of the Detroit Free Press)

At that time we were sending all of the pasties by Priority Mail. With no delivery confirmation available at the time, and no guarantee of 2-day delivery, it is remarkable that we were able to send over 17,000 pasties successfully to all 50 states, before coming into compliance with USDA inspection, and switching to 1 and 2-day guaranteed delivery with express services.

This shot sure brings back the memories of those early days. If you have a few minutes you can hear the story, as told at the 2000 Information Technology Summit

What a tradition pasty making is for Yoopers.
My dad and members of his church
community in Farmington (LP), gather
together to chop and make pasties once a
month. We just had two of those delicious
pasties for supper last week.

Nobody around here can even pronounce pasties. It's laughable. Everybody calls them paisties. I guess there really should be 2 s's but it drives me crazy to hear them called paisties.

It's been raining here for 3 days now. I think it's time to start building our ark. It's getting depressing. However, in taking 2 animals of each kind, the snakes, wood ticks and mosquitoes are staying behind. Oh yeah, those huge horse flies that are all over on Lake Superior aren't coming either. My husband calls them little stealth bombers as he says you can see them coming from a mile away.

A paistee story ...
About 10 years ago or so, or maybe someone remembers a deal when they created the world's largest pasty...anyweay, they had a news report about it on one of the Madison Wisconsin TV newscasts...the reporter called it a paistee....they had about 5 thousand calls before the news program went off...they issued a retraction..it was hilarious.

We used to have pasty sales in high school to earn money for our senior class trip to DC. These were usually pretty much fun...stayiong up all night until they were all made and cooked...then delivering them. I can't remember how many were made, but there were hundreds

Speaking of paisties, I gave a pasty.com calendar an extended-family relative last Christmas. After all the oohing and aahing over the pictures, the recipient noticed the pasty.com logo and asked, "Who's Patsy?"

Is one a Pasty, and two or more are Pasties? As it is in one Deer and two Deer's? Pasty is food for thought I think.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Sunday, April 30, 2006 - 11:46 pm:

My aunts and uncles and cousins helped make many of the pasties at the Lutheran church in Farmington. I remember being at the church as a little kid during a visit downstate. A few years ago Kilpela and Friends played for a dance at the Finnish Center. I play tenor banjo for the group. :o)

Kenjamimi--

I'll pass that on.
