Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 07:49 am:

The early days of the Pasty Cam back in '98 featured so many of our favorite spots here in the Keweenaw. On this day in April eight years ago, we took a trip to Canyon Falls, a mile up Eagle River from the village with the same name.

Now almost a decade later we're bringing the same kind of vicarious adventure, with today's waterfall shots from Susan Hooker being a good example. Susan is one of about 350 contributors who now provide the daily photos. Back in the early days it was just my son Jonathan and I teaming up to bring a picture-a-day. So glad that others joined the ride along the way, and now take us to their favorite places, too.

more tomorrow

Beautiful U.P.

Good Morning all, It sure is nippy here but will warm up soon, everyone have a beautiful weekend, Grandma Jellybelly

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 07:52 am:

It's a splendid morning here in Toronto. Just
returned from walking around High Park--a
large park in downtown Toronto. I heard a
couple of white throated sparrows singing and
enjoyed the cherry blossoms (the trees are a
gift from Toronto's sister city in Japan) in full
bloom. My husband called to tell me he saw a
freighter on Lake Ontario as he headed for
work this morning. A fine start to the day!

By lz (Llamamama) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 07:58 am:

Beautiful pics again today! Thanks to all for the info yesterday, on where to find cool UP stuff. (Spent some quality time on line last night ;o>). Not to spoil anyone's weekend, but we are starting to need rain bad. No irrigation yet and over 400 little blueberry bushes just planted! Happy weekend all!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 07:59 am:

Morning everybody! Maddie will not get her walk in today as it's pouring rain here and is going to continue through Sunday. Hooray! Just in time for the weekend.

Our plum, cherry and apple trees are all starting to bloom, with the plum being the fullest. It's absolutely gorgeous in our yard now (well, except for the fact that the grass is about a foot high and this WAS the weekend we were going to take care of that).

Everybody have a great weekend! It's my turn to work late at the bank and to work tomorrow. I guess I don't care that it's going to be raining!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 08:43 am:

Good morning everyone :) Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Llamamama, Rain is in our forecast for Saturday.

Mikie, So what did you do with that roast that you dropped on the floor? I am going to say that you served it, instead of throwing it away. Cooking tip #1: Before removing food from a crock pot, unplug the crock pot and place it in a dry sink. Transfer the food from the crock pot, to a bowl, that you have placed on the counter, right next to sink. Less chance of you dropping the food. Cooking tip #2: Always make sure your floors are clean, before you start cooking...this way if you drop something on the clean floor, the ten second rule applies ;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 08:48 am:

Sur5er, Great cooking tips there. Mikie cracks me up. He leaves us hanging as to what he did. There's so much rain here this weekend that I'll have to be sure the flamingos do not drown.

That lighthouse picture is wonderful. I just love those things. My dream is to visit as many of them as I can. So much history there. When you see them at night lit up, you can envision the sailors lives that they've saved. Makes me dreamy!

Mikies supper saga...to serve or not to serve?

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 09:12 am:

That purple sky and lighthouse photo is fantabulous! Mikie what happened about your roast? You will learn a lot of kitchen tricks from us experienced cooks if you pay attention. :) Good sanitation trick sur5er....And Deb S.....saw a cute yard decoration sign last winter.."Mow" was on one line, above that it said "Bale" then above that "Move" :>

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 09:53 am:

Good morning all !! You guys stop picking on Mikie ! As a
couple of you know, I just got a huge cast off my hand, and for
St. Pats Day I was trying to put a very slippery corned beef into a
pot to cook. Which was not easy because of the cast, it was
slippery !! Well, it slipped and I was afraid it was going to the
kitchen floor but it didn't it landed, ontop of my nasty cast !!
YUCK!! It reeked of corned beef untill they sawed it off !! So ,
don't feel like the only one Mike, stuff happens !!

Ok, I've looked all over for an answer to this question, but have yet to find it. I know Miners Castle was named in 1771 by English explorers searching for minerals. But I'm curious if there is anything saying how old each turret was? I'd guess that by observing the rate of errosion someone other than me could get an idea of how long the turrets were around before the collapse. Anyone know the answer to this?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 11:09 am:

So there's more than one Canyon Falls in the Keweenaw area? I only knew of the one near L'anse. Same with Silver River Falls. My favorite is the one on the Abbaye Peninsula, and actually that is my favorite falls of all in any season. The leaves always smell deliciously there.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 11:10 am:

Ms Katie: to answer your question of yesterday: Commerce Township is adjacent to Walled Lake and Union Lake Michigan, near Wixom, Waterford, and Milford. It is now a "suburb" of Motown. West of Pontiac, north west of Detroit.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 12:05 pm:

Hey, I had just cleaned the floor and had actually used hot water and spic and span instead of the usual way I clean it, Swiffer wet ones, after my son left with the dog and cats I have cleaned and cleaned to get rid of the hair and dog slobber. The next time that I use the crock pot I will use your idea of using the sink. I left a message on yesterdays What's Up. I have to confess I washed the meat and served it I also threw it in the crock pot for a while to get the taste and spices back. I can tell everyone because Precious doesn't go on this site. She really complimented me on the dinner. Maybe I should throw it on the floor everytime, it might add flavor.

Anyone know when the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge opens to serve food for the year? I am going up this weekend to open camp and would love to sit down to a prime rib buffet this Saturday

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 03:46 pm:

Mikie, you crack me up! LOL @ add flavor. How is your grandson feeling?

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 03:54 pm:

Afternoon All.
--Radsrh-- Look on the opening page of Pasty.com and click on Keweenaw Mtn Lodge and you will find more info. including a phone #. Enjoy the day everyone.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 03:54 pm:

Lets' coin a new word and call it "floorver". That addition which happens after the roast bounces on the floor. Stick that definition in the North Beach Diet book.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 04:28 pm:

Joseph is doing fine he is bsck on formula and is gaining weight, had a lot to do with all the candles lit for him. My daughter teaches fifth grade and asked me to make her a set of stocks, you know the boards with the hole for the head and the holes for the hands. People driving by are all making comments about them,I probably should put them away, but am enjoying the company. I never thought that I would end up being the character on the corner. At least I am not the Speedy Jenks of Berkley. Old imbiber in Hubbell.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 10:41 pm:

Where's everbody been since before dinner? You two guys, Rowdy & Mikie, give me the giggles with your antics. "Floorver"? What a hoot! I like where you put the meat back in the juices to "floorver" it. Good thinking. I think that deserves THE FLAMINGO award for originality tonight. Seriously Mikie I'm so glad little Joseph is doing better.God bless him. And by the way do you still live in Hubbell? Can't wait til I get up there this summer to check out my grandparents' house.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 11:00 pm:

MSkatie, I married Precious forty years ago and have had to live in Berkley Mi. It is a suburb of Detroit. I get up to Hubbell quite often, who were your grandparents? My sister, the greatest sister in the world, still lives in Hubbell. I would leave in a minute but my kids and grandkids live here so I guess I am stuck here. Does anyone know how to keep a cat out of the kitchen window and off of the granite? I am not the kind of person who allows animals on the kitchen counters. He is getting close to living in the celler. Everytime I catch him I sanitize the kitchen. Getting tired of doing this.

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Saturday, April 29, 2006 - 12:08 am:

Mikie...pick a day or two when you won't be using the kitchen much (may have to plan ahead a bit). then cover your counters in some kind of sticky paper or two sided tape. Kitties DO NOT like to jump up and have their little footsies stick to the counter. This worked on mine two times, different cats. Just once neded for the second one, the first needed a couple of lessons. :) Let us know if this works for your little counter pussy-footer.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, April 29, 2006 - 12:19 am:

Jimmie is not a little kitty, he is twenty two pounds and white, fur all over, but better then when the two orange cats were here. When my son moved into his new house he took the shedding cats and the shedding black lab. I go through one of those sticky rollers every two days. I will try the sticky tape and if that doesn't work Jimmie and Precious can both move to the cellar, since he is her cat and not mine. He will jump on me when I am typing on the computer, unless I close the door to my office.
