I'm reminded by today's Blast from the Past that Jonathan was just a college kid when we started the Pasty Cam in '98. In the upper parking at MTU he snapped the shot of the Blazer next to a snowbank, and then for contrast he inset the thermometer down on US-41. We won't get that warm today, but should make it into the 60's.

Jonathan went on to graduate 3 years later. As a junior in college he had already started working full time as Systems Administrator of Pasty.NET, the Internet service which spun off of Pasty Central. In 2001 he designed Pasty.NET's original wireless broadband network, in collaboration with Michigan Tech's Keweenaw Research Center. From there it has grown to include users in extreme parts of the Keweenaw Peninsula - where we are working to reach even more neighborhoods with the high speed service this summer.

I have Good News for my Good Friday..My nephew arrived back home to eastern Iowa yesterday after serving 7 months in Iraq with the Marine Reserves. If you can read, thank a teacher...if you can read English, thank a Vet!

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 09:06 am:

I am not trying to be jerk here but I really dont understand the comment... if you can read English thank a Vet.I have total respect for all service men and women, and dont want to sound otherwise.I have friends who serve in Iraq and elsewhere.Maybe it is because we came from a large city where many of my American neighbors were immigrants who did not read english.I never thought about it being non American to not read English. If I am missing somthing please let me know.Sorry dont mean to offend, really.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 09:18 am:

Just an another proud expression of gratitiude that is said here in eastern Iowa for the return of our service men and women. If you have family that is called to Iraq hope they return as safe as my nephew did.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 09:24 am:

Bobbysgirl, Glad to hear that your nephew made it home safe and sound, from Iraq :)

John and Anne: It simply means that thanks to our vets, America hasn't been overtaken, and thus is no longer America.

Sure sign of Spring , we are headed to Lake Mich. for the week-
end !! Yip, yip, yipee ! Can't wait to walk on the beach there !
The photo of the grad. reminds me of when my niece graduated
from Tech., we drove to Brockway Mt. to watch the sunset ( I
will never forget that !) and then to Mariner North (?) for dinner.
It was a great day !! Have a great week-end everyone !!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 09:59 am:

Loulou, What part of Lake Michigan are you traveling to? Have a safe trip and great weekend :)

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 10:02 am:

Kentucky John...... Hope you got your question about the "Thank a Vet" phrase answered. Shouldn't be too hard to figure that one out......

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 10:33 am:

Su5er.....South Haven !! We have friends who are very generous
about "sharing" their cottage on the lake ! Fortunate we are !!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 11:15 am:

Oh what I'd give to be in South Haven. We spent many weekends there while we lived in Dowagiac. A great spot for Lake Michigan. While in Wisconsin we did a lot of UP stuff--folks liked to fish. My brother was in Newberry (working at, not a resident in the State hospital) and we loved going to Superior to play with our daughter. While you're in prayer today, lift up Joyce Bos, our school's social worker. She is dying of pancreatic cancer.

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 11:28 am:

Margaret....I'll think of you on the beach today, and Joyce also.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 12:16 pm:

Loulou, South Haven is about an hour from us. Have a wonderful weekend...and enjoy those dunes :)

Margaret, Will definately keep Joyce in my thoughts and prayers.

I received word the other day that Bishop Ingalls from the Mariner's Church in Detroit has suffered a stroke. It has left him without speech & he is paralyzed on one side. He is the minister who rang the bell in his church for the men on the Edmund Fitzgerald on the night it went missing. He has devoted the past 30 years remembering those men & their families. He has been doing God's work for 49 years until he retired last summer. He is a great friend to all mariners & I truly admire this man. Please pray for his recovery.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 12:35 pm:

Good afternoon and Happy Easter, there are a lot of reasons this year for me to pray. My grandson who is one,Joseph Ozanich needs prayeres also he is having problems with his stomach. He can't keep anything down and now his ribs are starting to show. Doctors, including his Uncle can't figure out what the problem is. It isn't the flu and they can't help him. Hurts to see a baby in pain.

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 12:48 pm:

I see what you saying about thank a Vet.Maybe a better way to put it would be...If you have the FREEDOM to PRINT or READ this...thank a Vet.The US census figures show that by 2010 over a third of all US households, English will not be the primary language spoken at home. They already print the census in six other languages.California has drivers license forms in 32 languages. The comment just seemed unfair to our immigrants, although I know no harm was meant. One of the things that make this country great is the diversity.I wonder how many different languages were spoken at the Quincy Mine?

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 12:57 pm:

Michael have they tested for crohns "sp?" diease? A friend of our has a child with symptons that had the doctors stumped. They think it might be crohns now.

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 01:02 pm:

The immigrants that worked at the UP mines did speak different languages, but they LEARNED English. My grandfather did........

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 01:18 pm:

John and Anne, As the grandchild of immigrants, who learned English, I do not think the remark is an insult ;)

Mikie, Has your grandson been taken to the Children's Hospital/ Medical College...I think it is in Ann Arbor. Wonderful hospital. Hope they find out what is ailing him, and he recovers soon.

Cotton, Hope Bishop Ingalls continues in his recovery. No doubt, that all the angels from the Fitzgerald, are watching over him ;) I remember your post, last November, about Bishop Ingalls and his dedication to the Fitzgerald crew. What a remarkable person, eh.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 01:24 pm:

Mikie, Here's a link to Chron's disease, that John and Anne were referring to. Leave no stone unturned ;)

Okay, good points to all! Thank God,and the men & women who serve,we live in a country where we can have open forum on issues like these. Gotta love the pasty camers ability not to get to heated in discussions of this nature.Thanks.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 04:50 pm:

Cotton--

Thanks for sharing that information. I'll add
him to my prayer list and will tell the kids in
my class. They were so impressed to know
that your dad was on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
We have a replica of it and a postcard
prominently displayed in my classroom. And
of course we've read books about it and
listened to Gordie Lightfoot's song.

Babyseal--Happy to hear your nephew is
safely home.

Mike,I am sorry to hear about little Joseph.I think the advice about taking him to Childrens Hosp is a good idea.We have one here and they do wonderful things! Little Joseph will be in my prayers. Sure hope your little guy gets to feeling better soon.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 09:41 pm:

Michael, have they tested for Celiac Disease? It is one on the most under diagnosed diseases. Often mistaken for reflux or other things. It is a simple blood test that shows rather or not your body processes Gluten. The test is cheap as well, I think my daughters was only about $30.00. For some reason doctors dont look for it. Another thing to check into is Leaky Gut syndrome. Hope they find out what is wrong and get the little guy some relief. Here is a link for Celiac, 1 in 133 people have it, most dont even realize it or are being treated for reflux of something else that they dont even have. http://www.celiac.org/

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 10:23 pm:

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. As of now they are trying having him on a lactose free formula. He still is throwing up and has severe diarhea. my son in law is a doctor and he is going to have test done on Joseph. I think prayers are helpful also.

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 11:18 pm:

Have seen the bumper sticker thank a teacher/vet...one that says it well is "If you can read this, thank a teacher...if you are reading it in English, thank a vet"
