Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 06:57 am:

The former home of Connie's Pasties in Ahmeek was the subject of the Pasty Cam on this day in April 8 years ago. I remember one Saturday morning that month, I had just been at Fred the Barber's place in Mohawk shortly before noon. On the way in to Calumet I happened to glimpse the 'pasties' sign, and thought, why not give it a try? I met Connie and her husband, and sat down at one of the small tables in her quaint little shop. I had been working out in the yard that morning before going for a haircut, so I had worked up quite an appetite. The pasty Connie served me was one of the most delicious, well balanced, flavorful combinations of veggies, meat and crust I had ever tasted.

Years later Connie would enter her pasties in the competition at PastyFest in Calumet and take first prize. Maybe some of you were there, and remember how hard it was raining in Agassiz Park that July afternoon.

The third annual PastyFest will return this summer, and I hope you can make it (and hope the rain doesn't).

Edmond Burke observed that all that is necessary for the triumph of evil-
is that good men do nothing.
So lets look around this weekend...

By Dennis Kemper (Gliderrider) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 07:46 am:

I remember the 1st Pasty Fest well, with the rain that chased people into their cars to eat the free pastys. Lets not do the rain dance for this years celebration. See you all there!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 07:58 am:

Sure wish I could make it to pastyfest, but nobody's allowed to take vacation around the 4th of July at the bank. It's just too darn busy. Our town has one of the biggest celebrations around and plus the carnival's in town. It's a big business week at the bank. Makes me mad. Maybe one year it will be held at a different time. Have fun everybody!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 08:31 am:

Hey Fran, Is everybody okay down there? I saw the devastating pictures from outside of Nashville last night and immediately my thoughts went to you. Hope all's well.

Margaret, Are you guys still okay? Would like to hear from both of you.

Tim, Congrats on getting the Early Bird. I slept in this morning. Felt great!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 08:58 am:

Thanks for the rain dance for me yesterday. I do hope it doesn't rain for pasty fest. We burned 30,000 acres on Wednesday. the wind doesn't give us a chance. It looks overcast today, but that is the ash and dust blowing. Love you all for my concern. Can almost taste the pasties now.

Good morning everyone :) Finished up some of my paperwork last night, and hubby is now at the post office, getting it posted. Yeeeeeee haaaaaaaaw!

Gormfrog: how true! With this Indiana case, the number reason that it got so out of control and went on for years: out of everyone who knew about the 'problem', no one did anything about it, but a few legislators and me= 3 people to put a stop to a wrong committed by numerous courts/judges :)

Wow, saw some really tough weather down here last night. Our greenhouses took a beating but are still standing, thankfully. It looks like we lost some of our outside crops to hail though. Anne and I were just in Hendersonville,Tn. two days ago, hard to believe the damage that happend there last night.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 09:27 am:

I remember the first Pasty Fest and the intrepid dancers in the cold, pouring rain. Enjoyed a totally different scene last year with gorgeous weather and a park full of people. Should be great again this year. I hope there will be a central location for out-of-town pasty cammers to meet each other.

Congratulations sur5er!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 10:14 am:

Thank you Maija :) I finished the paperwork at about 4am...opened a bottle of wine...and woke hubby up to toast six months of hard work, that will hopefully make a difference. Cheers :)

John and Anne, Glad to hear that you made it through the bad weather, safe and sound.

Hope Fran and Alex are safe and sound.

Margaret, Glad to hear that you are hanging in there. Hope and pray those fires end soon, and more rain comes your way to help put them out.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 10:25 am:

Congratulations Sur5er on such an accomplishment. You can be proud of all your hard work. Now, girl, take some time to do "nothing" but whatever you want.Any chance you could make it to the Pasty Fest? Wouldn't that be great!?

By Karen (Kmr5os) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 10:31 am:

Does anyone else remember when the Connie's was a grocery store? I don't remember what the name of it was, but I'm pretty sure at one time it was a grocery.
Have a wonderful Saturday! The sun is out here in SE WI.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 12:18 pm:

Hi everyone,we were fortunate last night!! I went to bed around midnight and it started thundering and there was this awful lightning.I heard the rain start and then it turned to hail so I got up and went and looked out the back door. The ground was covered with nickel sized hail.It didn't last long tho.We didn't get the high winds like they forecast. As I was sitting here last night I got to thinking---just what would I take with me into my "safe" room(master bath) Purse, checkbook, bill file, pictures, videos of my grandson..There are so many things that are important and precious. My heart goes out to all of the folks in Tn who lost so much.

I haven't heard from Alex today. He called yesterday to tell me to be sure to keep the TV on and listen to the warnings. He said they were at a lesser risk for severe weather. It is a pretty day today. Sur5er, I'm glad you are finally done with that case.Yay!!!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 01:57 pm:

Good afternoon from Mishawaka, IN. Congratulations Sur5er on getting your paperwork in the mail. Glad to hear all those who are or were in fire, tornado, etc. way are safe. Every time we get a tornado watch I pray they never happen. Have seen the ravages of the Palm Sunday tornado of 1965 here in IN. One of my friends from my job lost everything. We helped her clean up the area. Never saw such distruction.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 05:58 pm:

Thank you Ms. Katie, Fran and Charlotte :)
I would most definately love to make it to the Pasty Fest. Wouldn't that be great for all of us to finally meet :) Will have to see what hubby's vacation plans are. Come to think of it, he did promise me a summer vacation in Da UP ;)

Fran, I was thinking the same thing last week, when we had tornado watches. Since our house is elevated, I know we would lose everything on the main floor, in the event of a tornado. My heart goes out to those whose homes and lives are destroyed by tornados.
Hope Alex checks in soon, to let us know that all is well with him and his family.

Charlotte, your vacation from school has flown by quickly, eh. Bet you are counting down the weeks until summer vacation :)

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 08:03 pm:

When our kids were little, more than once I herded them down into the basement. There used to be an enclosed old cistern with thick walls, a latched door and a single light bulb. But there was no way they would go in due to a few spider webs LOL But would have tossed them in if I felt it was necessary. :>

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, April 8, 2006 - 08:35 pm:

Sur5er, Congrats! It must be a great feeling. I hope it all turns out the way you want it to after all the hard work you've put into this case. It must be rewarding to accomplish it after all these months.

Congratulations sur5er on accomplishing what you set out to do. Add another feather in your cap. :)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Sunday, April 9, 2006 - 04:00 am:

Ms. Katie, happy to see you had a safe trip to your summer home. :)
