On the last day of each month we dedicate a scene of Upper Michigan beauty to the memory of those who had a connection to this special place, and who have recently moved on to a better one.

On the first day of each week, our tradition includes a "Sunday Shoebox Memory", a photo of interest from this region's history.

Today we combine the two. Our thanks to Clyde Elmblad for this tranquil 1910 view of the old Catholic Church at Assinins. And we invite all to add to the list of those we remember:

When was the church built at Assinins? Is it
still there? I know this is probably quite an
ignorant question, but I really don't know
anything about that community and in my
quest to find out more about Father Baraga
I was wondering if the church was around
when he was around.

Anyone out there in Pasty Cam land able to
shed some light on this?

Charlie, I'm even more ignorant than Kosk because I don't even know where Assinins is. Could you please tell me. Also, that was a very moving tribute. What are the words up next to the church? All I can make out is Lake Superior by moonlight.

Also, in memory of my Aunt, Dorothy Crouch, who died (I think) 4 years ago this May. I think of her often.

My mother Katherine Stanton Du Long died in April six years ago. When I was a kid mom and Mrs. Koepell would take our used clothes to the orphanage at Assinins. Mary Koepell and I were given suckers that were in celephane [sp.]rows and we were supposed to give each kid a sucker. All I did was hold them out with one hand as far away as I could get them from me and the orphans would attack us and take all the suckers. I would always feel good on the way home. My grandmother on my moms side was raised at the orphanage. Kosk where in Farmington is the church that make the pastys? My son is the shift commander at the Farmington Police Dept. now on midnights. Still no baby.

It's hard to believe, but a year has past. We remember Hal, (Fran from GA's husband), who died a year ago yesterday. May God bless the family at this hard time. Hal will always be missed.

In memory of my son, Andy, who left us 7years ago April 2. He was 34 when he died and we, his Mom, Dad, and brother, miss him very much. He was a special ed high school teacher and the kids loved him. I remember the notes some of them brought to the funeral home to put in the casket.
Also, in memeory of my parents Don and Betty Rogers and Grandma Wilma Welcome, all would have celebrated birthdays this month. They are missed.

Reading your post made me cry. What an
extraordinary teacher and listener your Andy
must have been for his students to put their
messages in his casket. His influence goes
on, you can be sure of that. I'll bet many of
those students think and speak about him.

His ripples are there on the waters of life.

Just talked to my folks in the Copper Country about the Church in Assinins and they say that services are still held there every Sunday. They also said that Bishop Baraga built the Church in Eagle Harbor too. What a legacy he left.

Thank you for remember Rev. Richard Ingalls. He was a true servant of God & man. I'm sure he will reap many rewards up in heaven for the work he did here on earth. I plan on attending his funeral to pay my respects to him. The church will be overflowing again as it is each November service for the Edmund Fitzgerald's men. He had many friends & parishoners.

Mike- I remember visiting the orphanage outside of Baraga when I was young. The nuns took us kids down there for the day. I felt so sad leaving there that day thinking those kids had no Mommy or Daddy. I pass thru there alot & still think of the orphanage & those kids. Wonder if any live around here. Would be interesting to know.

Remembering all my Catholic relatives from Lake Linden/Hubbell...Studer, Fretter, Boudreau, Asselin, Cassabon, Marcotte , Gagnon, Schnotala....wonderful folks dearly missed.

like Charlotte, I remember an extraordinary person, special ed teacher, and friend, Sharon Trybon. She left us totally unexpectedly at only 40 years old.

I also remember Pam Gershon, who died in a horrible car crash at this time of year on her way to Toronto with her husband, when she was only 32. Another wonderful teacher, person, and lovely friend. All the long years gone by have not dimmed my memories of Pam and her love of life and wonderful sense of humor.

Here's a little information about Assinins.

Assinins was established as a Catholic Mission in 1843 by Father Frederic Baraga. It was the last mission he established before he became the first Catholic Bishop of the Upper Peninsula in 1853. Because there already was a Methodist Mission on the east side of Keweenaw Bay just north of L'Anse (Zeba), Father Baraga built his mission on the west side of Keweenaw Bay just north of Baraga. Assinins is named after Chief Assinins who was first to be baptized here by Father Baraga.

An orphanage building was built in 1881. During lumbering and mining days most of the orphanage's children were children of European immigrants whose parents could not support them during hard times, or because of one parent's death. By 1920 or so it housed mainly Indian children.

The church in the picture above is no longer there. A log cabin church was built in the early 1980's and is called "The Most Holy Name of Jesus Church".

Some time back in the 50's there was a sign on US 41 by the mission. It said, "Sacred Heart Friary." As we drove by one day when my young daughter was just learning to read, she asked," Mother, what's a scared heart fairy?"

Alex, I can't believe it is a year that Hal passed away. We all miss him alot. It is actually worse now that there is a lull in the house repair.

Remembering also my Bro Norbert(99, brother-in- law Ken Anderson(04)who both passed away in the mo of April.

I have a wonderful book called Lady Unafraid by J Raleigh Nelson. It was republished in 1963 by Roy W Drier. It tells the story of Mr Nelson's mother Rebecca Jewel who at the age of 17 left her job as a teacher to the Ojibway Indians in Lanse. She was under the appointment of the Methodist church in Keweenaw Bay. She taught there for a yr. This book tells of her daily life and travels that year. Bishop Baraga was at the Catholic Mission.The Methodist Mission was located between the Catholic Mission and Sand Point.The Indian Village was located on the ridge across the bay from the Methodist Mission. Inside the cover of this book is a map showing these places. Crebassa's Trading Post was located right at the bottom of the hill on L'anse Bay. As you can probably tell this is my very FAVORITE book!! Oh, Bishop Baraga was at the Catholic Mission at the time. She liked him a lot

Mary says: I also have read this book (after a discussion of it back in the Archives: July 27, 2003) and enjoyed it immensely. My local library did not have a copy, but was able to order one from another library on loan to them. It took awhile to get it, but it was well worth the wait!

My Dad James Russell Emmons, too many years ago April 24, 1967. Too soon, too young, too sensesless. He was a decorated World War 2 veteran. He was in the Battle of The Bulge. His division was one of the first into Germany.
I salute him!

kosk: I was about to post a message about my favorite book being Lady Unafraid when I saw the other posts! I, too, got mine from the library (in Genesee County). I would like to own a copy, but those listed on Amazon (I think) were priced exorbitantly.

Helen Milan...Is that the same Sr Janelle Cahoon from St Scholastica? She was a sweety. I had her sister, Sr Mary Odile, as an instructor. At the time I went to Scholastica, Sr Janelle ran the bookstore. Also, in memory of my father John Blomquist,who 2 years ago in April. We miss him a lot.

I only paid $6.95 for the book.I'd say I got it in the late 60's or early 70's.

Kosk, My daughter Dani teaches at Angel school in Berkley, fifth grade, and I made her a set of stocks for her room so she can take pictures of her kids in the stocks, she is teaching about the Rev war right now. Since the becentenial we have been doing reenactments of both the Rev war and The French and Indian war. now she can teach it using all of our equiptment to show how they lived in those days. I am making things for her to put in a dig for the kids to discover. I have a lot of repect for teachers.

Fran my thoughts are with you, also. I can't know exactly how you feel just as someone who hasn't lost a child can really "know" how I've felt. Each loss is so individual. The good Lord be with you each day. With love from a friend.

For my dear "Sweetie" Willie Bertz who passed on April 19, at only 59 years of age. He had just celebrated a happy Easter with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and beloved granddaughter. He will be missed by many, but none so much as me.

In memory of my grandmother, a very special woman, Sylvia Olsen. She passed on April 22. I am forever grateful for the guidance and love she showed me throughout the years.

My wishes for warm memories for all of our loved ones that have passed away.

I would like to remember my grandfather, John Hilden, May 6th will mark 2 long years since he passed away.

Also, my grandmother, Joan (Dupuis) Drake, May 7th will mark 3 months without her.
