I'm not certain what's more enjoyable when visiting the area waterfalls here in the Keweenaw, the journey getting there or the actual viewing of the water pouring over the precipice. Maybe it's the combination of the two that makes it such a pleasure. For those of you that can't make the trip to the Hungarian Falls this time of year, Susan Hooker did the leg work for you, with camera in hand. If I'm not mistaken this is the Upper Falls, located just off M26, in Tamarack City. That side view shot sure gives you a good perspective of the drop the rushing water takes!

Mary, I believe those are the lower falls, but I too could be mistaken; it's been known to happen...

Most people don't know this, but the area around Hungarian Falls is one of the best exposures in the Keweenaw to see the famous Keweenaw Fault, the major dividing line between the Portage Lake Volcanics (basalt) and the Jacobsville Sandstone. If one knows what to look for, there are a lot of interesting features in this valley, as well as the valley that contains the Natural Wall.

Morning!!! Anyone have a recent pic of Eagle River Falls? Should be flowing pretty good from the snow melt.

Great shot! Instead of being at work wouldn't it be great to be lying on that big smooth angled rock with the sun beating down on it while listening to the waterfall.

Anyone in the area and interested in helping out, the MTU superior search and rescue is sponsoring a cleanup at Hungarian falls on sunday starting about 10AM.

Everyone is welcome to come along and help out.

If anyone was loking at the bridge cam that was the Coast guard cuttter/bouy tender Alder that was docked and just left heading east.

Of course they HAD to leave at 8AM putting up the bridge and stopping traffic on the way to work. But somehow I didn't mind ;-)

Anybody know how Hungarian Falls got its name?

Beautiful. What I wouldn't give to be there in person experiencing the falls...especially on a beautiful spring day like today.

Aaahhh! the relaxing sound of a waterfall! The hospital I am employed with has a cascading water wall, it makes a good substitute.

Acutally, I believe the first pic is of the upper falls and the second pic is the lower from the side. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and they were going full blast - wonderful.

I can almost hear the water rushing by...
I wish I was sitting by those falls instead of sitting in my office.

Anyone know how the falls came to be known as "Hungarian Falls". My grandma came to the US in the early 1900's from Hungary so I always have an interest in things "Hungarian"! Have a good day all.

Hey BobG, I'll trade you the bridge going up at 8am for Houston traffic at ANY time of the day!! ;-)

Capt. Paul, My MTU Graduate son just moved to Houston. I agree with you. I would take the bridge for the Houston traffic any time. Houston has some of the biggest jams I have ever been in.

And in all honesty Gordo, Houston isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I think Las Vegas is worse, just because the city is growing faster than the infrastructure can handle. I have also heard from a somewhat reliable source *coughDrNatcough* that east coast traffic is the worst. I guess I will get the opportunity to see it first hand when I go to Philly in October.

Although now if I ever get back to Houghton, I won't feel so bad when the bridge goes up and I have to wait 15 minutes; it's all a matter of perspective.....

Has anyone seen any kayaks running the gorge in Alberta? Can't wait to get out on the Escanaba River. It a great place to spend an afternoon. Boney Falls has a 2 mile stretch where you can leave a bike or car and ride the river down to the first bridge, take out and ride your bike up to the put in. Great way to spend a few hours outside, I usually can get in 4 runs in an hour and a half.

Thank you, BobG, for telling us what boat went under the bridge earlier this morning. I happened to be watching the motion picture in your link at the time the bridge was up, so I watched the boat go under it. That's fun to watch the bridge open, with water traffic moving beneath it!

And,you're right, it does look like quite a flow with the sun at that angle now!

Us kids used to go up to the falls & play when we were young. A hermit lived not far from there. We'd go as far as his fence & see his house off in the distance. His dogs would bark & us kids would get scared & run off. He used to take his bath in the falls. We saw him in the water one time. I went to the falls a few years ago. The area around it has changed,its grown in in places, trees are alot bigger,& our ole path is gone. But it is still as beautiful now as it was then. I took time to sit by the falls for awhile. It was so relaxing, listening to the water,hearing the animals or noises in the woods & the birds singing. Even walked up to where the old fence was by the hermits. His house is gone but I still remembered where it had been.Later in life, I DID find out Bill Runtamati wouldn't have hurt a fly. Yeah, I guess I'll have to go back there later this summer. Maybe even take my grandchildren to show them another beautiful place in the UP.

The first picture is what the locals called the Bluff. My great friend Mike Ziemenick and I spent most of our summers there talking about what we would do when we grew up. We also would camp out there with his dog, whose name I have forgotten. Like a lot of other Hubbell kids I had a really great childhood being able to explore the bush and have a swiming hole so close to the town. Mike and I would listen to the bars in town with their music blaring, there wasn't any air conditioning in those days. I have found that the many generations of kids from that area all have the basically the same memories.

Mike,you are right I think all of us had pretty much the same experiences growing up.I still know the words to most of the polka music coming from the bar where Quincy's is now. First it was Harry's,and then Charlie's.I'd lay in bed on the weekends on the warm summer nights and listen to the change in the voices. Decidely more "relaxed" as closing time grew near!:)

Oops, I forgot to mention how beautiful the falls are. The UP sure has a lot of the nicest ones. I meant to type decidedly instead of what I did!!!

As Mikie said, the upper falls is known as the bluff by the locals. And having grown up in Tamarack Mills the bluff was our favorite swimming hole. Swim suits optional of course! We would dive off the large boulders visible in the photo. The Hungarian Creek was also a good trout stream back then where my friend David Cavis and I spent hours fishing. And the surounding woods were great for camping and hunting partridge.

Mike, how did you end up not going to DBHS? I know David and Charles did. They were a yr or 2 behind me.I think they were in my brother Bob's class.

Cotton, Thank you for the memory! That must of been fun when you got to go there! Your grandchildren will enjoy it as much as you did. Hopefully they will be given the same opportunity as you had growning up!
