Union Bay is located 16 miles west of Ontonagon, which is almost in Z-Man's back yard! He sure knows how to make us all wish we were there with the click of his shutter. Looks like the perfect spot to spend some time camping and with 100 sites to choose from, you'll have your pick this time of year. Best thing about hitting the campgrounds early in the season... no bugs, no crowds, just Lake Superior shoreline at it's finest. Can you hear the waves lapping at the beach? Priceless...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 07:02 am:

It looks a lot like Little Traverse. Wherever it is, it's beautiful! And yes, I can hear the waves. What a grand place to live!

By Mark Dhooge (Markdhooge) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 07:22 am:

Very Nice Picture.....I remember many a day at this beach, having grown up in White Pine. I believe I have several photos very similiar....bet this was a beautiful cool brisk morning, unlike the humidity we have here in South Florida!

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:01 am:

Fuel to drive up to the UP $3.00 a Gal...Food and drink in the cooler $10.00....Batteries for the camera $7.00....Sitting on that log looking at that view...Priceless

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:02 am:

so soothing!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:10 am:

John and Anne, Amen! I have a shirt from my girlfriend that says, "Bridge Fare: $2.50; Pasty $3.50; Trip to the Upper Peninsula: Priceless". And that says it all!

By Debra J McCumber (Debrajean) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:32 am:

Good morning everyone! Very beautiful picture again this morning. My fiance and I are heading to Pictured Rocks (again!) for Memorial weekend and we are so excited we can hardly stand it. Can't wait to wake up and fall asleep to scenes like the one pictured above. Have a great day all!

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:33 am:

Usedtobeayooper: Any idea where those T-shirts can be bought? Thanks,

By Katie Keranen (Yooperkate) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 08:56 am:

lz (Llamamama): I looked on Da Yooper's Tourist trap site (www.dayoopers.com) and didn't find it, but there's some other pretty neat shirts there. BUT, I did find it on the Touch of Finland's website (www.touchoffinland.com)just click on T-Shirts on the right side and there she be!

By Nate (Nalwine) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 09:41 am:

Almost 2 years ago to the day I was at this very site! I actually wished to find my way back there today. Guess pasty.com gave me my wish :)

Here is the same exact spot 2 years ago:

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 09:44 am:

Hey Mary, it sounds like you are quoting part of the theme song from that "famous" TV show called Yooper Island.....

"No bugs, no crowds, no tourist there, not a single care in sight, like Toivo in his swampers, as yooper as can be...." LOL

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 09:46 am:

The icy Superior shoreline pictured above reminded me .... We were in the UP on Easter weekend visiting family and the ice on Lake Gogebic was just going out. AFter the shoreline ice was gone our 3.5 yr. old asked "Can I go swimming?" We said sure !! IN he jumped !!Anyone beat that record?

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 10:11 am:

This is the kind of beach scene I see in my mind's eye. Really nice shot!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 10:12 am:

Debrajean, Enjoy your trip to Pictured Rocks. If you have the time, definately take route 58 ;)

Wow, I could have gone for a nice stroll on this beach yesterday, after a day of conference calls...and best of all, I wouldn't have had any cell service on this beach :)

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 10:25 am:

Oh now you exposed my secret mental hiding place. Haven't been there phycially for a long time. But it's where I go when I close my eyes and drift away. (sigh)

By Justin Johnson (Tinksno) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 10:39 am:

Looks like the trees are saying hello again
Nice and green
See you in 2 weeks!

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 10:58 am:

Yooperkate, thank you so much! I am torn between trying to educate these trolls as to the value of the UP and taking the chance that it would end up ruining the beauty that today's picture portrays.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 01:09 pm:

Llamamama, My friend reads this site every day and I'm sure she will let me know where she got it from and I will surely pass it along. I love it. It's one of the best birthday presents she's given me (except for my Yooper flag which was used so much it is now tattered and torn and hanging in a place of honor in our garage). I'm glad other people can appreciate it. It's as good as my Freda one "Freda-15 miles, End of Earth-10 miles". I love it! My dad grew up there so we spent a lot of time on the shores of the lake by Freda. And now my uncle has a cabin down there. I just wish the beach was nice and sandy rather than that gray stuff from the copper mills. Oh well, you can't have it all.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 01:19 pm:

First trip to the UP about 1977, on a hot summers day right at this spot, yours' truely decided to test the water. I got up to my shins, before my toes froze. Welcome to Lake Superior!

By jeffryeleconte (Upwannabee) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 01:24 pm:

HELLO,
THE PICTURE IS COOL. WE HAVE NOT BEEN WEST OF ONTONAGON. LOOKING AT THE BEACH MAKES ME WONDER ABOUT SWIMMING THERE. IS IT DONE? DOES THE WATER EVER WARM UP? IS IT ESPECIALLY TREACHEROUS? WOULD IT BE FEASIBLE TO CAMP WITH THE GRANDKIDS AND SWIM IN THE LAKE. JUST DUMB QUESTIONS...HUMOR ME ,OK?

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 02:54 pm:

upwannabee...kids will swim in anything! We would turn blue and then once numb, could stay in the lake for hours. The key it to have an old fashioned sauna all fired up and waiting, or maybe a camp fire!! Last summer was the warmest I have felt the lake in years. Go for it.....camping along the lake will be memorable for all no matter how cold the lake is. Don't forget the OFF and fly swatter!! But just remember, even on the best of days.....the lake is still freezing by most standards!!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 03:03 pm:

upwannabee: Does the water ever warm up? ROFL! Actually, it was considerably warmer last year. I wonder when that will happen again.

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 03:04 pm:

Thanks for the interesting shot! I remember in my younger years when I thought I could paint, I always had trouble with water - esp. with a shot like this - the water looks kinda "flat!" I feel like i could go right over to the "edge" of that water and peel it up!! Anyway, this picture evokes solitude and it would be great to be the person standing there taking it all in!

By Skylar Baxter (Skylar) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 04:10 pm:

UPwannabee, yes you can swim there, this was taken last June, yes the water was VERY cold. I am facing the direction the above photos were taken from, give or take a couple hundred yeards.1

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 05:26 pm:

IZ, my husband got that shirt at a store in Sault Ste.Marie. A couple of the shops had them.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 06:23 pm:

Been there, done that

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 09:26 pm:

Yes, the lake did seem warmer last year. We were in it for quite a while actually out at the Great Sand Bay. It was wonderful. The lake is never warm, by any means, but you can't help but go in. When we were kids we (well I) would be blue before we'd come out, then all you had to do was lay on the sand and you'd warm right up and go right back in. Those were the days. I just love that lake.

Oh any my friend told me she got the shirt from Da Tourist Trap in Ishpeming. Oh to live there and be able to shop that store any time. But I guess we can since we have internet. She says they have some really cool things online.

By Phyllis K. Miller (Phyl) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 11:55 am:

What a great lake. I have turned blue and been numb and sat by a fire warming up and stuffing roasted Vollwerth's hot dogs and marshmallows in my mouth many a time. I need to make a trip to the lake for relaxation therapy. Beautiful picture.

By Barry Seymour (Bimplebean) on Friday, April 28, 2006 - 06:17 pm:

I dunno about Ontonagon, but I do know Lake Superior in Marquette in August 2004 was plenty too cold for me. However, my then six-year-old, Taryn, was in there for an hour!

https://pasty.com/pcam/Marquette-Vacation,-Summer-2004/Taryn_in_Lake_Superior

I remember being immune to the cold when I was that young too!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, April 29, 2006 - 01:05 am:

To have been blessed with The Big Great Lake ice cool water myself, having spent the first 18 years of life in it often. If you ever had a bucket of it dumped on to you while your sweeting soaking up the Sun,then you should feel Superior. You realy don't get any colder the rest of your life.Unless of course you do it again.
I live in Union county TN.Would be in trouble if we had a Union Bay like that!So ya got's to think about what you wish for eh? When i'am asked," How's the water?" I always say," WET. cause one must feel for themself. What's good for the goose, may not be good for the gander.
