Why'd the deer cross the road? To keep the traffic on its toes, of course! Not sure if this is the same deer in these shots or two different ones that Tanya Voldarski caught on camera here, but I do know that they're both in Eagle River. You can see the trails cutting through the snow that remains, where the resident deer herd make their way across M-26, on the trek to the roadside park for a picnic. This spot is just as you leave Eagle River heading further north to either of the Harbor towns. If you look real close - -

Sorry, Toivo, we've not had much to feed to the deer this year. Edie and I have been pretty busy with all of the activity at the Hut these days, in preparation to re-open the restaurant in a couple of months. But that's only part of the story. We are also building a pasty drive-through behind the Hut ("Pasty Central Express"), turning out onto Wolverine Street. This is the building where Pasty Central pasties will switch to baking under USDA inspection in the near future. Current pasty shipments you can order online are baked at the Baroni's building on Sixth Street in Calumet.

And if that weren't enough to keep us busy, Pasty.NET is completing its new network center (in the lower level of the Hut), which now enables us to serve all of the U.P. with DSL, wherever lines are available... and more lines are becoming available all the time. This summer we hope to have a video conference center completed in a new addition to this historic building.

Maybe next year Edie and I will have time to feed the deer again.

Mary, Again I didn't even need to read your report to know where these pictures were taken. When you've been there as often as I have you just know by looking. Great shots. I've never seen deer there but I've sure seen deer lately in the mornings when I take the dog out walking. Never have my camera though. Maddie's always in too big of a hurry. And Tim is right, there ARE two deer in the 2nd shot.

Cool! Our antelope have had a hard time with the wild fires. Haven't seen too many near the highway lately.

A sure sign of spring...deer out and about...and deer in the roadways. Drive careful everyone ;)

Looks like Spring has sprung in the U.P. all right. There's a lot of people excited to hear that the Hut is reopening this Spring. Hopefully it will be fairly origional in decor and menu. People just naturally like good things to stay the same with little change. One of the reasons that the U.P. is so special is that it has not totally joined the rest of the country at becoming just another region of strip malls and traffic jams. Some people may debate that point with all the growth in Houghton but I think the U.P. still has a good balance.

I like both pictures but ,for the life of me,I can't see a second deer lurking in the shadows. I have even zoomed in on the shot. Can anyone point it out?

Erica, I think I see what may be a deer's face. Divide the picture into 4 rectangles/ quarters. In the left upper quarter notice a white rectangle which seems to be maybe water in the dictance. Right below that white it looks to be a deer's face and below that the chest and two legs seem to show up. Does that help? It is looking face forward at the camera.

Try turning the light on a little bit.

Just to the left of the foremost tree with its head about even opposite the large branch going to the right about in the center of the photo ane as Ms. Katie says the two fron legs showing against the snow below. There's dirt or a fallen tree behind its head and it is in the deepest shadow just to make it easier to see!

the deer seem to be in good shape

My family went up to the deeryards a couple of weeks ago. The deer looked pretty healthy overall. Only one looked like it had mange. Anyone else get to see the little white footed deer? I wish I would have remembered to grab the apples that I had at home. I know you aren't supposed to feed them, but......
