Kim Beyer has shared some neat shots of her boys with the Pasty Cam over the years. Today she brings a moment frozen in time, from about 1940. Just one more winter outing before all the snow is gone.

This week while on the phone with a friend in Lansing, we compared notes about just how much snow is still around. Downstate there was none, while here in Eagle River there's still a couple of feet in places. Won't be long, with warmer temps on the way. But neither can we forget that April has been known to bring some surprises.

Did you remember to 'Spring Ahead' with your clocks last night? I heard that our friends in Indiana are also jumping on the Daylight Savings Time bus this year. An added hour of light each evening, from now til the end of October, which helps reduce electricity use. Here's a link to the current time, in case you were wondering.

I love the Shoebox photos on Sundays :) Can't help but notice the sled with runners, sticking up in the snow...and wonder when was the last time I've seen one like that...because everything is plastic nowadays.

Charlie, Indiana still doesn't have it together, in regards to the time. Part of Indiana is on central time...and the other part is on eastern time. It gets to the point, that you have to check your cell phone, to see what time zone you are in, when traveling through Indiana ;)
I found out that of all the agencies that determine time zones and DST, it's DOT's department. Dang, DOT sure is a busy gal, eh.

Part of the U.P. is central time and part is eastern time, too silly!

weirder still, central time is south of eastern time in the u.p.

Instead of springing ahead 1 hour, the picture looks like we've all fallen back 66 years. And is that an early prototype of the "Stormy Kromer" hat on the boy on the right? Compare the heft of that bumper the boys are standing on to today's plastic bumpers.

You've got the sturdy bumper observation down right, I remember my father standing us on the roof and fenders of the family car to see parades and that's something you couldn't do today. The kids feet would leave prints like in wet cement! You could wear your hat in the cars then, too, now the fabric of the headliner pulls on my hair.

The official spelling is Daylight SAVING Time. "Saving" is used as a verbal adjective (a participle, as in "Excuse me, your participle is dangling" ;)

DSL is not observed in many US territories, including Guam, Puerto Rico and even Arizona and Hawaii.

The Navajo Nation participates, even in Arizona, due to its large size, spanning three states. THANK YOU KBIC for allowing me to learn that:)

In Israel, ultra-Orthodox Sephardic Jews have campaigned against Daylight Saving Time because they recite Slikhot penitential prayers in the early morning hours during the Jewish month of Elul.

The idea of daylight saving was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin during his sojourn as an American delegate in Paris in 1784, in an essay, "An Economical Project."

Standard time zones were first instituted in Great Britain, with the US following in 1883, by the railroads, hence the DOT connection, Sur5er. Detroit held out with their own local time until 1900, btw.

Germany was the first country to adopt DSL, followed by most European countries all around 1916-17. FDR instuted year-round DSL in 1945, called "war time".

In 1966 Lyndon Johnson signed DSL into law, modified in 1972 and 1986 to give us the DSL we know and love, today.

Finally, for those of us who find no good in DSL-
In september of 99, the Palestinian West Bank was on daylight saving time while Israel had just switched back to standard time. West Bank Palestinians prepared time bombs and smuggled them to Arab Israelis, who misunderstood the time on the bombs. As the bombs were being planted, they exploded—one hour too early—killing three terrorists instead of the intended victims—two busloads of people.

HEY, I just noticed all of my useless DST trivia is about DSL. Way to go :(

I love DST! It was especially neat before I retired and could come home to 4-5 hours of yard work, a bike ride, or going out to the beach. Another bit of trivia: I heard this morning that ALL OF CHINA is on the same time zone! Wow! Re the photo: Ugh! on the woolens, and do you guys remember those hightops?

JAD: China is all on the same time zone and that has very weird effects! I was working there a few years ago, it was summer and in one part of the country the sun was setting at like 5 in the afternoon. Maybe it was just the extreme jet lag I was feeling! ;->

Daylight Saving Time was invented by the same guy whose blanket didn't come up far enough....So he cut a foot off the bottom and sewed it onto the top!

When my kids come to dinner, I make a full meal with salad, main cousrse, some kind of meat, starch of some kind, vegies, and a desert. Today at a family dinner at one of my kids house, we had pizza and salad, and all of my kids do the same thing. I don't know why they are like this unless they are to busy to cook. So to start another cooking flurry. I am going to make chili tomorrow,with corn bread and cheese. Any ideas to add to the chili? Or to the meal itself. I want to surprise Precious with something different.

OK, here's a new chili idea I saw the other day that looked unique. Make your cornbread batter, maybe a little thinner than usual, and put "plops" of it on a cookie sheet. Bake, watching carefully, because it won't take long. Put a cornbread plop (not a culinary term) on each bowl of chili. It looked cool!

Marsha sounds good, I will try it.

Mix chili and cooked rice, pour cornbread batter on top of chili and bake until cornbread is done, you have "Chili Conquistador".

When we traveled to the UP several summers ago, my kids could not believe that it was still daylight after 9 p.m. We don't have DST in most of AZ, but remain Mountain Standard Time all year. Half of the year we are 2 hours behind the Copper Country (and 1 hour ahead of Calif.). The other half we are 3 hours behind the Copper Country (and the same time as Calif.). It took a couple of years to get used to it.

Mikie, I love putting sour cream and shredded cheddar cheese on the top of my chili :) Trying to remember the last time I made chili. Let's see...lots of onions...and diced jalepeno peppers ...or peppercinos ;) Gotta admit that Marsha's idea of 'cornbread plops' on the top of the chili does sound delish :)

Sur5er, I use sour cream and cheese on top also. i have put sour cream in spagetti sause also. it is the way the Calabrese make it I am told. Precious and I are suffering from colds and today is the day that I can't breath day of the cold. Can't wait for tomorrow when it is the pain all over day. HAHA

If you have it, make your chili with venison-there's nothing better than venison chili, unless its a venison burrito.

Btw, Mikie-you can't get me w/ food talk tonight-we had a supply ship come alongside today and hand over fresh veggies and fruit !!!!

I have never met a deer that looked like he wanted me to eat him, maybe because I always miss them.My father in law killed one in over fivty years of hunting so I figured out the venison cost him about $2500 per pound

It was actually fifty years not fivty years, but it was still expensive

I have to admit my venison has been pretty expensive, as well. Bagged a 5-point this season, but it had been several years since the last one.

I didn't know that deer could swim out to the boat for you to kill them for the chili. Some of us are not as lucky when it comes time to hunt. Last deer that I killed I had it butchered and put it in the freeser and told the kids that I had bought half of a cow. They complained about it for the whole time that we ate it. They hated the spagetti so much that my daughter Dani, the smart one wont eat spagetti with any kind of sause. The two others didn't complain as much as she did.They still ask if I am serving them beef or venison.

By the way they grew up in Berkley Michigan and didn't have the fortune of growing up in the Copper Country.

I guess I'm lucky-my kids really like vensison in anything; burritos, spagetti, stew, steaks, even in with the eggs. During my last trip out here they ate all my venison summer saugae-the last 10 pounds in 7 weeks :(

same here-grew up in Livonia-only been up here 17 years, now.

My son used to live in Livonia, now lives in Farmington he is a shift commander for the police in Farmington.He chose to do this after I sent him away to State for his education. I said to my kids either be a doctor or marry one. My daughter who lives in Manistee, listened and married not only a doctor, but a fisherman. He goes out in the season everyday.My daughter Dani has her Masters and is working on her doctorate. My son says he will return to school after his kids are in school full time.

I've got a brother in Livonia, but thats it. My kids are still kids, thankfully (I'll miss'em when they go). My oldest will be headed to college soon. Well, shift change-off to the gym:)

Mikie and Marc, Here's a neat way to get venison: a lot of police departments, (the more rural the better), do keep a list of people who want the deer meat from deer, that have been killed by cars.
Oh no...I can see it now...Marc and Mikie out 4WD deer hunting. Ooops.
Mikie, Have you tried soaking your venison in wine vinegar overnight? It helps remove some of that wild game taste. Or, when trimming venison, try to remove as much fat as possible...and cook it with a combination of hamburger/beef, to offset the wild game taste.

I have no problem eating venison , it is my kids. Now they don't trust me. Precious wont even try it.

Mikie, I remember when I was young, and my dad used to go pheasant hunting...and sitting downstairs and helping him pluck the pheasant. So I guess that I have always been used to having some type of wild game.

For your cold, trying making something and sprinkling it with either cayenne pepper...or red pepper flakes...guarenteed to wake up those sinuses and put the cold to bed ;)

In that part of the world, with any luck, a generous supply of Durian was included among the stock of fruit! Ahh the memory of Durian flavored ice cream! Enjoy! <wicked, evil grin>

I just wanted to add that DST will be longer in 2007, Congress passed a bill that says DST will begin the second sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
