Another first on the Pasty Cam! On this day in '98, Jonathan discovered that he could rotate the Mavica 90 degrees and... voila! "Portrait mode". Up to this point in the first month of this daily feature, each photo had been in Landscape mode, wider than it is tall. But the portrait mode would go on to provide a vertical perspective on the Pasty Cam, on days when the up-and-down look was more effective than the side-to-side.

As Jonathan and I discussed all these technical details in those early, formative days of the Pasty Cam, I would suddenly realize, This scene is beautiful, however we post it on the web. Remember back in those days the Internet was only a few years old, and there was not much content on the 'net relating to Northern Michigan, much less a "picture-a-day". This may well have been the first photo on the WWW taken along 5-mile-point road.

Thanks for all the notes from viewers who have enjoyed these daily reminiscences, re-living that first month, March 1998. Tomorrow we wrap up the month, and introduce a new navigation tool for accessing the voluminous Pasty Cam Archives.

Oh great shot by the way! Does anybody know where it was taken? Sur5er, you still up or just on your way to bed? I hope you're nearly done with that case of yours. You were up late last night again I see. I would be SO dead!

So many photos on the Pasty Cam have qualities worthy to appear in National Geographic or Time Magazine.

Good morning everyone :)
Usedtobeayooper, I'm just now headed off to bed. Once you get the hang of midnights, you are able to sleep during the day...just like you would at night...which is the real secret to surviving midnights ;) I'm hoping though, that this will be the last week that I will be working on this case.

Aren't fireworks spectacular? I just love them, but only the controlled ones. I don't like shooting them off at home. Two years ago my granddaughter got struck in the eye. It wasn't a pretty sight and everybody was frantic. My hubby says there will be no more fireworks at our house. Amen to that!

That is a great shot of fireworks. Its hard to get a photo of them to come out right. We love fireworks, got married on the Fourth of July.We shoot off a show for all the neighbors. We bring a truck down from our volunteer fire dept, the kids enjoy this as much as the fireworks.

Neat idea for celebrating an anniversary-
You should move to our neighborhood!

Good Morning!! Deb S...Was your granddaughter okay? Scared
you half to death I'll bet !! I do not have children, but it has
always scared me when they get the sparklers out !! Danger,
danger ! My other half is missing half of his hand because of
playing with explosives when he was 16. Fireworks has gotten
very big down here in the summer for any reason, not just the
fourth of July !

good pictures again, jAPEi. Some make me understand again why Finns felt so comfortable coming to the Copper Country.

Loulou, My granddaughter's fine, thank you. I shouldn't have said "in the eye" but just a hair beneath the eye. Thank God! It just, and I do mean just, missed the eye. We were so scared that most of us were crying right with her. Her face was nasty for a while, but thankfully it went away. Could have been so much worse. I know, the sparklers even scare me too. It'd be so easy for the little ones to poke themselves in the eye with the things. We'll go to the fireworks in town on the 4th, there will be none out here.
Japei, Thanks for the great shots today. A lot of them remind me of the Keweenaw Peninsula---beautiful!

Usedtobeayooper, So glad to hear that your granddaughter is okay...what a scare that must have given you.
One of the things that I don't like about Indiana, is that there are no restrictions on what type of fireworks that people can buy. Talk about dangerous...you can't even venture outside for fear of being hit by someone's misguided firework. So far, I have lost a blow up pool to a firework that veered off course. And before that, one of the neighbors caught my deck on fire...and because he didn't bother to alert us, we were thankful to be home to catch the fire before it spread to the house. Yikes. We won't even get into the incident with the neighbor setting off fireworks, from atop the lightpole, (beer was involved) ;)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, March 31, 2006 - 09:26 am:

Sur5er, Sometimes people are so clueless. They don't realize what danger they put themselves and others in. My son had to get the fireworks that you had to cross the border into Wisconsin to get. The fireworks that were being shot off that day were illegal in Minnesota. My hubby will allow the legal ones to be shot off here, but not the ones that take off and you don't really ever know which direction they're taking off to. My granddaughter could have lost her eye, but worse yet she could have died. My son's girlfriend at the time also got burned. My son said the kids can stand on the deck next time. What's saying they won't veer off course to the deck? Use your head. Your inconsiderate neighbors need to be talked to. A couple of years ago it was so windy that even the controlled fireworks in town were veering off course and burning some of the people in the crowd. They are unsafe. But there are whiny people who think we need to be able to shoot them off at home. Last year 3 people died out here because of the illegal fireworks. AND they were all younger people. It's sad! Okay, I'm done complaining now. Have a nice day Sur5er.
