Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 08:13 am:

Rolling along through the fourth week of the brand new "Keweenaw Pasty Cam", Still Waters Community Elders Home in Calumet was receiving quite a bit of attention. The article in the Detroit Free Press was picked up on the wire services and began to appear in major newspapers across America.

Many times we would become aware of its appearing because of a ton of orders from a certain town. I remember one morning opening up the order log and seeing dozens ordered from Bradenton, Florida. Come to find out, the article about Pasty Central had appeared in the Bradenton Herald. It wouldn't be the last time we shipped loads of pasties to Bradenton, because we discovered there were quite a few displaced Yoopers there (especially in the winter) who would become regular customers. This was repeated in every town across the U.S. where Knight-Ridder newspapers are published.

The Pasty Cam was off to a good start, with such a boost from our friends at the Detroit Free Press. Years later pasty.com would be named one of the favorite website in the state in a poll among Free Press readers.

Good morning, all. This is still my favorite site.I like the pictures and all the interaction with other pasty cammers. They have to be one of the nicest group of people ever!

Good morning everyone :) Enjoying what may be our last snow fall for the season...got enough of the white stuff to cover the ground and the trees. What a beautiful sight to behold this morning, out our patio doors.
Erica, I definately agree with you...there are some truly wonderful people on Pasty Cam :)

Good morning and good weekend all. Wanted to express my thanks after reading yesterday's threads this morning. Once again I learn, in-spite of myself. Geology and recipes! Always a new day here!

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 09:45 am:

I have really enjoyed reading about the beginnings of Pasty Cam,
heartwarming! It seems as though I remember reading about it
in the Detroit paper. I usually "devour" everything I see about the
U.P., I have a large box in storage filled with articles about it! I
also have the set of books that Fred Reyholm wrote about
McCormick and his partner at White Deer Lake Camp. I find the
history quite amazing!! Thanks to you all !!

Have a wonderful weekend! stay well, we are having many cases of measles confirmed here.

Well, it was snowing earlier and I see that it still is. Everybody holding on?

Favorite bumper stickers??? My favorite...... "If you can read this in English, thank a Soldier."

By P&G,TN (Gormfrog) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 10:24 am:

Its on the way---Summer is when the weather is often too nice for doing chores put off earlier because of bad weather..

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 10:37 am:

Sur5er... How was the Meatloaf last night? You sure had enough
"help" making it!!!

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 12:31 pm:

My thought for bumper sticker comment,..."If you can read this in English, thank a Teacher."

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 02:14 pm:

I saw a documentary on the History Channel, I believe, that was something like the greatest inventions of all time. The show argued for all sorts of things as the greatest invention, such as elevators, telephones, cars, etc. I couldn't help but think that the greatest invention of all time had to be "teachers". After all, aren't they the ones that make everything posssible??

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 02:23 pm:

Yup, I agree.....teachers! We would have nothing if we didn't
know how to communicate with one another!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 03:37 pm:

Loulou, For a meatloaf, it was to die for...thanks to all the 'helpers' I had in my kitchen yesterday ;)

All that beautiful snow that we got last night, has already melted...hope there is more in the forecast for tonight.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 08:17 pm:

How nice. I am going to print off these
comments to show to my colleagues. We
don't read such kind words about teachers
every day. Thank you.

Now they'll understand why I like to check
Pasty Cam! All the pictures of snow just
doesn't do it for them.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 08:37 pm:

Thank a soldier is a good one, but we could read in English without soldiers. It's the teachers who help us to learn. We would be nothing without the wonderful teachers in this world. And Kosk, you're probably a great one. I can just tell you're a wonderful person. Hats off to you for all you do, especially working with special ed kids. It takes a special breed to be able to do that.

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 09:28 pm:

Kosk, Your a teacher? My hat's off to you, then.

You teachers are a good lot and rarely get the recognition you deserve.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 09:52 pm:

Kosk, Glad to hear that you got your reports done. I don't think a lot of people realize that teachers put in so many more hours, in addition to class room hours.
So are you gonna come down here and help me with my case paperwork? Hubby just made a food run for me, because I told him I was unable to concentrate on my paperwork, due to my hunger pains ;)

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 10:22 pm:

Good evening from Mishawaka, IN. Sur5er, glad someone got some snow last night, even if it is gone already. We had a few flakes around noon today but it didn't stick. It was a funny site on my way back to school at noon. Snow coming down pretty good and a tractor was working on the sod of the football field. I remember an October Friday afternoon a number of years ago we watched a city tractor with a plow plow the football field for a game that night. We'd gotten about 6-8 inches of snow during the morning. The walk to and from school sometimes gives me a laugh for the day. Got to get to bed. Grandson is spending the weekend and tomorrow I will visit the dinosauers, play Yahtzee, and any other game we can find. He is 8 years old and loves games.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Friday, March 24, 2006 - 11:56 pm:

Hei Marc, (Seismic Pirate) did you hear what Toivo, Eino and Urho thought were the greatest inventions of all times? Toivo thought that the jet airplanes were the greatest. "Those 747s can carry so many people, so far, so fast." What do you t'ink, Eino? Eino thought that computers were the greatest invention. "You can see so much information on dere. All over da whole world! Right in yer own living room." They looked at Urho, "What do you t'ink?" Urho thought for a minute and said, "I t'ink dat da Thermos bottle is the greatest invention." "What? Why do say dat? All it does is keep t'ings hot or keep t'ings cold." And Urho says, "Yeah, but how does it know?"

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 12:28 am:

Thats a good one, Ken. Urho should've listened to his teachers:)

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 02:41 am:

Seismic Pirate wrote: "We are shooting marine seismic surveys, imaging the earth below the seafloor, hunting for oil and gas." I have a friend that works for U of M that does something similar, only he does imaging with the satellite system and the seafloor. Is that something you are familiar with, or is it the same thing?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 03:38 am:

Beverly, Glad to see that someone is up burning the midnight oil with me ;) Sitting here drinking Blueberry Crumble Cake flavored coffee, and doing paperwork.
Kenjamimi, Got a good chuckle out of your joke. Thank you :)

By Seismic Pirate (Marc) on Saturday, March 25, 2006 - 01:12 pm:

Beverly,
We use high-pressure, air gun arrays to produce an energy(sound) wave that travels down into the earth. We record the reflections that return to the sea surface with large arrays of microphones, creating a 3D image that extends miles into the earth. Satellites image only the earths surface, for the most part. He may be imaging the sea floor for navigation/mapping purposes. i don't know much about satellites, except that's how I can communicate with everyone here:)
Anyway, I wish we could do what we do by satellite-then maybe I could stay at home!!

Thanks on behalf of teachers everywhere!

Doing your best is important in every field and
in every walk of life. Don't ever forget that!
