By the 6th day of the first week of the Pasty Cam, Jonathan and I really got the vision of what a daily feature could become. There were so many details all around us which combine to make the U.P. such a unique experience. This first thing most people notice about the 3/6/98 picture is the bumper sticker, "Say yah to da U.P., eh!"... Wonder how many notice that the bumper is held on with a couple of clothes hangars?

Years later a friend by the name of 'Toivo from Toivola' became a regular Pasty Cam visitor who supplied us with maps of the U.P. whenever we needed to pinpoint locations of the attractions which appeared on these pages. Back in March of 2003 Toivo set out on a trek across the entire U.S., into Mexico, across each province of Canada, and even ended up in New Zealand! Toivo claims that the car with the improvised bumper was his old beater, which he eventually sold in Alaska to get a ticket to fly to Hawaii. As he roamed around the U.S., we would often get emails asking, "Is Toivo for real?" If there ever was any doubt, you can visit with Toivo most Saturday's on the Pasty Cam the past couple of years.

One of my favorite comments came from a Pasty Cam visitor after we brought a new weekday host on board a couple of years ago. He asked me, "Is there really a Mary Drew??"

My parents have a bumper sticker like that. It is so cute. We have a magnet saying, "My friends went to the UP and all I got was this magnet. Am I ever lucky, eh?" We bought it to give to some friends, but couldn't part with it so it's on our fridge with all of our other Michigan, lighthouse, and Lake Superior magnets. For all of you Lake Superior lovers, there is a very cool magazine out there simply titled "Lake Superior". It's a great magazine with good vacation spots and gorgeous pictures. We subscribe and look forward to it coming. Anybody else subscribe?

Hi Deb S. I don't subscribe to Lake Superior but may have to! One of their writers contacted me last spring. They are doing an article on Beach Glass. The author of Pure Sea Glass (an absolutely gorgeous book that any beach comber would love!) put them in touch with me! I think the article is in the next edition! The Copper Country will be getting a little press!! As we all enjoy these winter pics and stories on Pasty, I am already looking forward to the sandy beaches and the smell of Lake Superior!

Woo-hoo to Stix! I used to go to that magazine's website, and I think there were some articles printed there.

Just went to the website & it shows the cover of the Feb./March issue, which shows the title of an article called "Rock-Pickers' Paradise". What is your real name, Stix, so we can identify you in the article? The website is lakesuperior.com.

Charlotte, did you get any of this gorgeous snow ...or did it peter out, before getting your way?
They had a poll on weather.com last night, asking whether you were tired of snow...and ready for spring...or were you ready for more snow? 76.5% of those who responded were tired with winter and anxious for spring...and 24.5% wanted more snow and winter.

Marsha, my real name is Sally Watters. I don't think they mention my business name, Stix 'n Stonz! The editor just recently contacted me because they wanted some photos. I understood that the article would be published in the next edition. I saw the "Rock-Pickers" article too but I don't think that's the one. At any rate, the editor said she would send a couple of copies.....we don't have that magazine on our news stands out here!

I really didn't picture Stix as a Sally! It's funny the impressions you get of people on pastycam when you don't know their real name! I pictured you (get ready for this!) as a tall, lanky, cowboy type (male)! There's your laugh for the day! Before I knew sur5er's story, I thought she must be a surfer!

Well Marsha....you weren't too far off the mark! I am tall, I am sort of lanky and I live in Arizona (in cowboy counrty)!!!! Ha! Thanks for the laugh! It is fun to picture some of these posters. I am guessing sur5er may have survived something! Very impressed with the creativity of that name!!

I subscribe to the mag. It is great. They won an award recently. Use to pick that glass too, Stix. It ended up in jars of water on the kitchen window sill for the morning sun to shine through as it came up over Keweenaw Bay.

Hey...send your beach glass collections to me!!! They look even prettier set in silver or dangling from an earring!!!

Good Afternoon! A friend and I have been collecting "beach
glass" from the shores of Lake Michigan, she has alot of it.
Someday, she wishes to "tile" her cottage counter top with it. We
"pick up" glass that is usually green, sometimes we find blue or
pink.

My favorite find along Superior was a piece of pottery, or a clay pot, don't know what it was or what you would call it. It was thick and glazed on both sides. Anybody know?

Charlie, I very much enjoyed your history of the Pasty Cam last week! You indicated that it was to be continued, but I don't see it this week. Hope you didn't change your mind! :)

Hey Stix,
I poked around a bit and found your website. I noticed right away you use the term "found object art". Where did you get that from?

I also make things from what I find on the beach and came up with the same phrase off the top of my head when somone asked my what I called my artwork last summer. Now I'm wondering if I didn't read or hear that somehwere (maybe from you??) and subconsciously used the phrase...
Anyway, your furniture is beautiful and creative-I wish I was that good!!

I'm finally feeling better! I got seasick from a combination of bad weather, a very small boat and deisel fumes:( I went back out today but the seas were calmer with a slight breeze to keep the fumes off the boat and it was wonderful. Got nothing but a suntan today:)

If anyone has any blue glass, I'm looking for just two, big pieces for a headboard I'm making for my daughter. (Looks like you may some competition for glass, Stix:)

I'm hoping that if Charlie's not writing it's because they're getting closer to having the rural wireless up and running! Keep the fingers crossed.

Sur5er, We did get some of that snow last night and again today. Amount wasn't to great an inch or so. Walking home from school for lunch today it was snowing so hard and everything looked so pretty. Twenty minutes later walking back it was half snow half rain. The rest of the week is supposed to be warmer with rain.

And I've always called it bottle stone. Have heard of seaglass, either
way it's pretty stuff. And I think it's the easiest for little kids just
starting out to recognize because it's so distinctive, even if it's
rare.. Plus cool to collect. From there on, if you've got them
hooked, it's easy, until they start finding more agates than you. HA
HA.
In St. Ignace, next to the Coast Guard Station, there's a beach w'
real glass (sorta turqouisy) slag chunks thrown out by a factory
next door (quite a
while ago).

Marsha, Don't worry...a lot of people think my screen name means surfer, instead of survivor...could because I spelled it the way it's sounded...and I pronounce words ending in 'or', as 'er'.

Marc, Glad to hear that you are getting your sea legs back. On the other hand, I like the smell of diesel fuel...I associate it with hubby and his semi, pulling into home, after a hard week on the road ;)
Charlotte, don't feel bad about missing the snow. All that beautiful snow that we got, has gone and melted...well almost of all it....there's just a little bit on the ground, and the grass is poking out of it. I imagine, that by this afternoon, what's left of the snow, will be gone. Sigh. I feel as though we got cheated out of winter this year ;)
