While checking through the Pasty Guest Gallery, I came across this aerial photo in Rebecca Frederick's album. It's really a unique angle taken of the Mackinac Bridge. Not just from overhead, but with the addition of the U.P and the L.P. on either end of the Mighty Mac, it gives a better perspective of that five mile connection for the two Peninsulas of Michigan.

Love that bridge! Great picture!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 07:18 am:

Remarkable, thanks for sharing Rebecca!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 08:08 am:

Great picture. I love seeing that bridge with both landing sights. Most of us don't get to see it that way.

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 08:11 am:

We usually go up the Wisconsin side when we go to the UP,but somtimes we have a MAC ATTACK and have to go up the side with the big bridge.Every now and then the history channel plays a documentary about the bridge,I think its called Building the Mighty Mac,worth your time to watch if you can catch it.

By sunnyinNM (Bob) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 08:34 am:

My nephew gave me this idea. Each time I cross the bridge from the LP, I pay my toll and the toll for the vehicle behind me. Try it sometime.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:10 am:

Bob, I love that idea. What a nice surprise for the person behind you.
Is this picture taken from the UP side?

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:17 am:

Bob, I like that idea as well. Hopefully, my luck does not find an 18 Wheeler in my rearview mirror!

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:17 am:

sunnyinMN,
What a nice thing to do. I would call that "paying it forward". I would imagine that the person behind you would in-tun do something nice for someone else. I know if it were me traveling behind you, I would never forget your kindness.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:28 am:

My cousin was just telling me how that happened to him and his family when returning from the State Football playoffs in 1997, the year Lake Linden won the Championship, so that was an especially nice gesture then! I like that idea too. :->

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:37 am:

I don't know for sure, but I think that pic must show the bridge
from the U.P. side. If it shows Mackinaw City, tho, where are
those big windmills (or whatever they are called) that you see
when driving off the bridge going south?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:47 am:

We had someone pay our toll on the bridge a year or two ago and now we often do that for others. Did the L'anse/Baraga area get any of the snowstorm this week? I see George Hite has a new journal page up about it. We have sunshine this morning! Woo-hoo! It's still cold and brisk though.

By kzoocathy (Loulou) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 10:21 am:

Beautiful aerial photo!!! Never seen that shot before!!! I love
the idea of "paying it forward"!! We need more of that around in
this country! My parents (deceased) have 8mm movies of
painters putting the finish coat on the bridge, way up there!!
Painting way up in those "arches", there are stairs and "catwalks"
in those "arches". I have seen that special on History Channel, it
is great!!

By Donna Utzman (Dutzman) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 10:22 am:

What is George Hite's journal page? I am originally from Calumet and like to keep up with as much information as I can about back home.

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 10:40 am:

the photo was taken looking towards the south. The glare on the water is a sure give-away.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 11:16 am:

Donna U. Try this for George Hite's page:http://www.eagleharborweb.net/
The following is the bridge from a little higher:

Enjoy!

Rebecca, Thanks for the wonderful aerial view of the Mighty Mac. I have never seen it from the air before, so your picture is definately a treat. Thank you ;)
Bob, What a wonderful idea to pay the toll of the person behind you, on the Mighty Mac. I will definately have to remember to do that next time.
Wow Marsha, I wonder if that was Bob who paid your toll a couple of years ago. Makes ya think, eh. ;)

Donna Utzman (Dutzman):
"What is George Hite's journal page?"

Once you get to George's Eagle Harbor Web -- finding where George's journal is hiding on that page is a little less than obvious -- Click on the Dog Days link in the second panel.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 12:11 pm:

Hi
Charles in Adrian, the windmills near Mackinaw City are not THAT tall, I'd imagine they are down in the blue haze.

There used to be a museum with Mackinaw bridge memorablila upstairs in Mama Mia's pizza in Mackinaw city. Sadly, it was lost in a fire last August.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 01:12 pm:

Donna: You can also get to George Hite's page by going to johndee.com. There's a link on his journal page and you can also read and look at John's stuff. He is a local meteorologist. He updates his journal every few days and it has lots of pictures that he takes within it. At this time of year they're mostly snowmobiling pics, but springtime pictures are coming!

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 01:39 pm:

I second Dccloutier. Pic is looking south. There is not causeway to the bridge coming out of Mackinaw City.

By P&G,TN (Gormfrog) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 04:11 pm:

Bob,
That idea is too cool, we can use our imaginations and expand this ...
Its never too soon to be kind,
for we never know how soon
it will be too late

By Syd (Gayoop) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 06:00 pm:

I moved away from the UP nine years ago today ... BOY do I miss that great unsalted sea!

I've been "paying it forward" since about 1974 ... Sometimes people then pass me, smile, and wave ... it's always great fun.

Thanks for the memories. :-)

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 08:24 pm:

General DeMara (ret.) worked on the bridge as it was being built

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - 09:34 pm:

I'm sure this is from the north. St. Ignace is right in front of us, and Mackinaw Island would be off to the left, what, maybe 3 miles? East of here anyway. Very nice pic.

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, March 16, 2006 - 02:02 am:

My dad is 80 years old. He helped put temporary lighting on the bridge during construction. They walked on cyclone fencing before the roadbed was built. Some good stories.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, March 16, 2006 - 07:31 am:

I'm a little late in getting on here for some reason as this was yesterday's picture, but what a picture. I love it AND the idea of paying for the person behing you. There's not enough kindness shown in today's world. Wouldn't it be nice to spread it around? Geez I love that bridge!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Thursday, March 16, 2006 - 12:05 pm:

Best picture of the Mac yet!

From now on, I will always pay the fare for the guy behind.

By Syd (Gayoop) on Monday, March 20, 2006 - 09:49 am:

Mr grandpa worked on the bridge, too. Bill Ernst ... he worked for the insurance company and look hundreds of pictures of the construction. We've (fortunately) got his slides.
