When you think of the winter months here in the U.P., the color white usually comes to mind. Greta Jones had an observant eye and captured numerous shades of blue amongst the snowy blanket too. Then, Tanya Berg spotted a bit of green, peeking out from under a covering of white. Notice how the tall trees in the background are free of snow? Both of these shots look like they were taken when the Keweenaw was experiencing some of that LES (lake effect snow) some folks like to call 'fake' snow. I don't know about the rest of you in snow country reading this, but as far as I'm concerned, 'fake' or not, you still have to shovel it! :->

By Brent in UPstate NY (Brent) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 06:02 am:

The "fake" stuff shovels just as good as the "real" snow.

talk about the winter blues, this is a beautiful picture.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 07:37 am:

I like the "couple" standing for a picture in the second shot.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 07:47 am:

Looks like more than a couple standing to me. These are beautiful shots. We really don't get to see anything like that here in MN very often. Though we're supposed to get 2 - 5 tomorrow. We'll see I guess. Love the shot of the lake in the background. But who wouldn't?

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 08:07 am:

Morning All.

Great photo Greta. Captured many hues of UP blue in one shot. Oh to be standing there. Enjoy the day everyone.

We have a short video taken during the world-record-setting snowball fight last Friday. It's available in either Windows Media or Quicktime formats.

On my computer, windows media files play with Winamp, and quicktime plays in RealPlayer.

Upon seeing the first pic, I heard "Isn't she lovely?" playing in my head! It reminds me of my Aura front yard. I certainly do miss it!

Have you seen the Google page the last few days? Is that Heikki Lunta performing Olympic feats?

By Glad to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 12:55 pm:

Absolutely 2 beautiful pictures for this time of the year or anytime of the year! Great work Greta.

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 07:15 pm:

Is that semi-spherical object below the bird feeder a anti-squirrel device? If so, shouldn't it be turned around 180 degrees so the concave points downward? Or do I not know my top end from my bottom end?

By Janette Kowalski (Ladybug) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 07:51 pm:

Thank you Charlie for the wonderful footage of the record breaking snowball fight. I so miss da u.p.! The pics were fantasic....makes ya wish for more snow here in the lower. Here in Oakland County the snow is almost gone with our 40 degree weather and tomorrow looks even warmer. This weekend though is to be a little brisk. Take care all you yoopers...I wish I was there in da u.p. with ya!

Does anyone out there have a reciepe for pasties with out using lard. The only reciepe my mother left uses lard in the crust making. Just looking for an alternative however if I must I will use the lard. Look out heart here it comes!

Chow for now and thanks for an responses in advance.

By anna swiniuchowski (Abswini) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 10:26 pm:

the ratio that was passed down to me is:
3 cups flour
2 'short' sticks margarine
salt
milk until it feels right

I have used Blue Bonnet mostly, but whatever stick margarine flavor you prefer will work. Not the 'light' version. Should get about 5 pasties out of this ratio. the main secret is to have all ingrediants very cold and work quickly. Never used lard myself.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 10:45 pm:

Janette, Don't know how much difference there is in our recipe, but we just use the pie crust recipe out of the Betty Crocker cookbook and it calls for shortening. We've never used lard. Good luck, hope this is what you needed.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 - 11:37 pm:

Gary W. Long, I think that 'object' is the bird-bath. Am I right, Greta? Nice pix, Greta and Tanya. Kiitos.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 10:13 pm:

That object is a squirrel baffle, although a bird bath is a good idea. The rodents can grip on to the connecting edges of the concave side, so I turned it upwards. The smooth side keeps them at bay, as well as collects the spilled seed. Thanks for the nice comments. : )
