Of all the crazy, fun things which Yoopers have been known to do, this was one for the record books. It was a calm and sunny Friday afternoon, with temps in the mid 20's, and lots of amunition available for the 4,400 who came to join this historic event. The previous record of 5'4" for a snowball was eclipsed the the 6.77 foot monster engineered by Tech students yesterday morning. By the time we were ready to fire the first volley of snowballs, the old record of 3,084 combatants was surpassed by almost 50%. After our arms were exhausted, we all dropped to the ground and made snow angels, more than doubling the former record of 1,791 set in 2002 in Bismark, N.D.

It will be a few days before MTU receives the official tally and confirmation from the Guiness Book of Records. I'll try to post some video of the event, so check back later today.

Sure wish I could've been a part of the record breaking festivities yesterday. Looks like one heck of a good time. Anyone know where I can see an ariel picture of the snow angel's?

Have a great Saturday everyone in Pasty land.

Very cool!

By dlp (Babyseal) on Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 10:54 am:

My son and husband were lucky enough to attend the festivities and both enjoyed it immensely. My hubby said when the snowball throwing commenced it was a pretty cool site, almost like two gigantic snowblowers throwing snow at each other. Someone estimated 25 school buses there. Now, what class applied to this event? History class, physics? It will be neat for them to look at next years Guiness Book of World Records and see something they were part of.

Good afternoon from Mishawaka IN. Boy, does that look like fun. Wish I could have been there and participated. Did anyone get a picture of the giant snowball? Would like to see that. Congradulations to all who participated.

Great job breaking records guys. It's always good to see the UP in the record books. Half the people in this country don't even know the UP is there. They will now.

Somebody, I don't know who, was supposed to come and get me. Yep, I know I'm almost 2000 away, but that was to be part of the fun.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 02:37 pm:

NKR the snowball is in the first picture, you get to try and throw it first.

Looks like the weather cooperated and everyone had a "ball" of a time! Wish I could have been there!

Channel 25 in the Flint area just showed a video clip of the people making snow angles.

My daughter called from California to tell me she was watching their local news in Sacramento. The feature story was about the Tech festivities and the giant snow ball fight, and snow angels. Her Dad is a graduate of MTU---worked on the snows statues back in the late 60's!!! Would love to see more pictures of the event. Wish we could have been there. Only in the UP>

We were fortunate enough to be apart of the wonderful day! My wife, three children and I had a great deal of fun. Winter Carnival has been a blast. We saw the Alan Parson band, MTU hockey, countless snow statues, torch parade, fireworks, curling and got to go sledding. This has been a wonderfull (but too short) vacation. I highly recommend attending next year if you can make it. However, you must get room reservations now if plan on getting a hotel room. This is truly a winter wonderland!

Man, it sounds like a great time. I wish I could've been there.
