The snow statues over on the Michigan Tech campus, are definitely masterpieces worth seeing. And for those of you not able to come have a look in person, Carl Shroeder let his finger do the snapping, so we could check out the 'engineers in training' handiwork. Fred Flintstone and company has to be one of my favorites, but I'm worried about Fred's bare feet on the icy roads! The spring-action Toy Story dog is quite delicate looking, as is the knight in icy armor's glassy sword and shield. In case you missed the link on yesterday's Pasty Cam, here's a rerun of Carl's 2006 Winter Carnival Slideshow.

Don't forget today about noon time, show up for the attempt to break three world's records up at the MTU sports fields! We'll bring a report of the event this afternoon...

Awesome as usual! Thank you for sharing with all of us who couldn't make it up there this year!

Gooooooo Toots!!! Great job as always on Winter Carnival and break those records today!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 08:02 am:

Carl, Thanks for the wonderful slide show of the Winter Carnival. What I wouldn't give to be there right now, to experience it all first hand, though. Would definately have loved to join in on some of the record breaking events, too ;)

Carl, What a great job you did on the slideshow! It's been so long since I've seen the snow statues at Tech. We used to love to go and see those every year. Out here in MN they make ice statues at the University of MN. It's just not the same, though they do do a good job. I think they look nicer made out of the snow. But we just don't get the amount of snow that you guys do to be able to do that. Thanks for bringing home to my computer.

Great slide show! Somebody asked yesterday what the rules for this contest are, never got an answer. If somebody could give a brief rundown of what is involved,it would be great.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 08:31 am:

I asked that last night, primarily because of the spring-action dog above. How do they do that?

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 09:25 am:

GREAT Pics!! I love the slide show. Excellent Good luck on the breaking the records!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 10:13 am:

Who out there has had the opportunity to work on the Snow statues? I helped build a Replica of the "Old Reliable" shaft house one year. It topped out at just under 30' as I recall. Quiet a pile of snow.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 10:16 am:

Quite, Quiet, either way it didn't say much. (didn't win anything as I recall) A good time was had by all though.

By lz (Llamamama) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 11:08 am:

Rules? See Blue Key site http://www.hu.mtu.edu/%7Ebluekey/rulebook06.pdf.
How to? I remember huge piles of snow, water hoses running, irons (you know to press clothes with) lots and lots of scaffolding, shovels, scrappers, pails, barrels, wood for frames, frozen, hands, feet, wet frozen clothing. Ahhh, what fond memories. Hard work, done mostly at night following studying. Thank goodness I was young and did not need sleep. My group never won.

By Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat in Texas (Eclogite) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 12:06 pm:

Every year I was at Tech I helped with a statue, or 2, or 3. I was involved in some of the Delta Sig and TKE statues that won over the years. Built my fair share of all nighter statues too for the Geo department.

As Im sitting here in Texas today, in 70 degree temps, it's just not right!! February is supposed to be snow statues, Winter Carnival, and Husky Hockey. Instead it's rain, fog, and green grass for me. Someday I will return to the place that I still call home and re-unite with all the friends I made over the years. Until then, I have the Pasty Cam to remind me of what I left, and to remind me of why I need to return again.......

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 12:06 pm:

Living in the Copper Country for many years and
looking at the statues is one thing, but becoming a MTU
parent gives you a whole new perspective on those
stautes. My son's statue was not in the slide show
because it was one of the "all-nighters". Those are the
ones that really take the cooperation and planning!!
They are often over-looked because their size is small
compared to the ones that were worked on for months.

By Marianne Young (Marianne) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 12:42 pm:

Carl's pictures are great!

I have the same question as Marsha, on how the slinky dog was made. Someone answered a general question of how most of the statues are built. But, our question is a more specific one, for the technical person, who is not an engineer, how are the several loops for slinky part of the dog formed?

Many thanks.

Just a quick update from Sherman Field. With about 5 minutes before the record attempts, there appear to be about 2800 people processed through registration.

You can listen to live coverage of the event, just follow the link on the pasty.net homepage.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 01:01 pm:

Oh to be there this weekend.

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 01:52 pm:

I just cmae down from sherman, what a sight to see

when they were preparing for the snow angle attempt, about 2/3rds were laying down waiting and 1/3 standing all over sherman field.

Immediately the Atlanta railyard scene from
gone with the wind came to mind. ;-)

It was great to see all the people participating.

By lz (Llamamama) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 01:53 pm:

Bobq, any idea if they set a new record? Tks!

By dlp (Babyseal) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 02:14 pm:

I cannot imagine getting approx. 800 school kids to lay down in the snow all at once. I can't wait to get home and hear my hubby's take. He was one of the school bus drivers. I told him he should participate in the snow angel attempt.
I know the school kids were just waiting to participate in the snow ball competition. My son was bummed when he was told they were only going to throw two snowballs each! And not at each other either.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 03:24 pm:

Oh, how I wish I were there. I've never made it
to the Winter Carnival. Sigh..

Have fun everyone!

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 07:59 pm:

What art... It blows my mind every year when these get posted. Just unreal!

AND... Since no one will fill my request and mail me a box of U.P. snow, we're going to Fran's tonight, for the weekend, and there may be some there!

One day, I will return. I am determined to live right near Lake Superior again!

Thank you FRnash of Arizona, for giving me the site of the winner's circle. It is very much appreciated.
Well Mr. Hasty Posty, maybe you should never have given up your Finn Card and lost your membership in that Finnish Club. You see, they are the only ones who serve that rich, dark roasted Finn Coffee, and a bowl of that "stretchy slime" called viilia that would have been sure to put hair on your chest. :)
