A couple of Copper Country canines are all dressed up to tour the snow sculptures on the Michigan Tech campus. Last night the brave, courageous (and slightly crazy) students at MTU worked into the wee hours, putting finishing touches on each masterpiece, ready to be judged this morning. The Pasty Cam actually got started back in the 90's covering the winter carnival. During the winter of '95-'96 we used captured video frames to bring scenes of the event to the web, and a couple of years later said, "Hey? Why don't we bring a U.P. picture every day?" ...and so the Pasty Cam was born. Never know what you might see... U.P. landscapes, people, animals, waterfalls, buildings, sunsets, history, Lake Superior... something new every day.
The doggie in red belongs to former Pasty Girl Becky Howard and her husband Bryan (who took the photos). Chewy posed with his big brother Tanner, who appears a little irritated with the fashion show. For those of you who have visited Pasty Central over the years, you know that Becky is our daughter, and she and Bryan are living these days in Salt Lake City, but return to the Keweenaw at every opportunity. And they always bring along our Grandpup Chewy, who seems to love U.P. winters just fine.

Look! little Yorkies! A fine member of the terrier group. My niece has two Yorkies and we have two Scotties, when the four get together, "let the rumbling begin!"

What darling dogs! Their coats are perfect for the weather!
I was worried about the snow sculptures a couple of weeks ago when the temperature reached 50 degrees, but after that thaw, the weather turned around and seems to have cooperated!
Good Morning all My niece raises yorkies and havenese and shows them in all the dog shows, She live on the west coast. www.havayork.homestead.com. Her website is really cute. Everyone have a GOOD DAY!!!!

We are leaving shortly to head up to the winter carnival and see our son at Tech. We can't wait to see the statues in person. To start our trip out right, we had pasty cam pasties for breakfast! What a way to start! See you soon.

Who owns Tanner? Sunrise Side, enjoyed your niece's website! She knows her dogs!

This site has really gone to the dogs. I would like to take paws and throw the pasty cam a bone for all the good work they do. Did you hear about the three legged dog that walked into the saloon? He came up to the bar looking for the man that shot his paw.

Mr. Bill: Those are the ice sculptures!! They are done in such detail, they almost look like real dogs.

Thanks FRNash. Just what I was looking for.

Only a handful of the pictures on the MTU Winter Carnival 2006 site seem up to par with their historical best efforts. That and the photographic quality of the pix on that site doesn't seem to be quite up to our Pasty Camists' skills either. (Can hardly wait to see their pix!)
What with the recent near meltdown however, this year's statues are still quite remarkable.

If you want the BEST up-to-date coverage of the Winter Carnival, you'll find it right hear at Pasty Central, as we have dozens of contributors uploading photos as we speak. One of the best collections comes from Carl Schroeder, environmental engineering student at Michigan Tech. And for a real treat, take in Carl's 2006 Winter Carnival Slideshow.

Thanks, Carl, what a treat! Can't wait to get up there!

Tanner is owned by my in-laws, Gary and Paula Howard. Tanner is actually the little brother. They are about two months apart. I have to tell you, Neither were overly excited about wearing the coats :)

"... the winners are now posted there ..." Of course they only posted the names of the organizations that built the winning statues - kinda difficult to associate that info with the statues themselves!
By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 11:11 am:
Well I guess I'm Mr. "Hasty Posty" this morning. If you click the Statue Winners link on the MTU Winter Carnival 2006 web site (or the shortcut here) it'll show the winning statues. (I need another cuppa coffee!)
