A couple of weeks ago Roger posted a message on the Pasty Cam page saying, "It would make my day to have something from the 16 mile lake area posted for all to enjoy. Ahhhhhhh I can smell the woodstove smoke now in the crisp night UP air." That's all our eager to please Pasty Cammist, Tom Cook needed to hear and off he went to capture a few shots. I don't see any woodstove smoke in the second picture, but the glow of the sun setting gives one that same sort of "Ahhhhhhh" feeling! To check out a few more photos from this area near Munising, go to Tom's Guest Gallery and check out page 10. Thanks Tom!

Love these Yooper road signs!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 07:20 am:

The road signs are almost like the Rice Lake area. I'm sure it's like that all over though. Nothing confusing about it either. Yoopers understand those things. Mornin' all.

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 08:18 am:

Those signs almost resemble a snowmobile trail intersection(s).

By Dotsie Salani Stewart (Suna) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 08:35 am:

We purchased a beautiful home on the Bootjack Road last summer. We plan to retire there soon. Since we are retired military--AF for 34 years. We decided to call our place "BootCamp"------painted the sign AF blue!!!!!

By Ellen Hass (Ellenm) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 08:41 am:

We will be passing that intersection next Thurdsay on our way to camp on Aleck Lake. Between there and Doe Lake Road is a great critter spotting area. The day we had to brake for a mommy River Otter was a hoot.

By moi (Moi) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 09:09 am:

Dotsie,

My nephews call our camp in Bootjack "BootCamp" too, because they're too young to remember how to say Bootjack! : )

Oh my gosh, how I miss signs like these...definately a 'sign' that you are up in northern Michigan. Thank you Tom :)

Sorry to interject some bad news. Ironic, on a day when we feature U.P. signs and structures, we received word that the historic Smith-Foley home in Eagle Harbor was destroyed yesterday. Sherif Ron Lahti snapped a picture at the scene:

Was that the beautiful home on the corner of the cutoff road and 26? It looks like it from the porch which we always admired. What a tragic loss!

By Vincent Vega (Theoneandonlykâ) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 05:00 pm:

I feel so sorry for Fred & family...
All the work and love they put into that home...
Gone, in an instant.
But, then again no one was hurt.
My thoughts are with you Fred, family and Eric the dog too, I know how much he loved that place also.

By Vincent Vega (Theoneandonlykâ) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 05:02 pm:

The Geis home was on 2nd street in the Harbor...Kitty corner from the Eagle Harbor Store.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 06:00 pm:

Tragic.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 09:02 pm:

Losing your home in a fire is awful! My sister and her husband lost their home, garage and all their belonging in a fire today in Toivola. Thanks to their dog raising a ruckus when the smoke alarm went off, her husband was able to escape from the house in time.
I am counting blessings today.

By NancyLee Beyers Wakeman (Nancylee) on Thursday, January 26, 2006 - 09:21 pm:

The Foley/Smith home was built by my Great-Grandfather, John Foley. It was built after he married by Great-Grandmother,Mary Anne Rice in 1862. Mary Anne Rice grew up in the house next door, which was also known as the Rice Hotel. My grandmother, Elizabeth Foley Daley inherited the house from the Rice family, my mother,Lila Daley Beyers, inherited the house from her mother, Elizabeth. John, Nancy Lee(Beyers) and Dan Wakeman are now the proud owners of the former Rice Hotel.

THe house did receive some damage in the fire. The windows on the side near the Foley house were broken, the paint is pealing off and the house was filled with smoke.

We thank the fire fighters and our neighbors for all of their help in saving a 150+ year wonderful old historic house.

All of the Foley and Smith family are very sad to have lost their ancesteral home and we also are sad for Fred who put so much effort and caring into the house.

Fred and family, so sorry to hear of the loss of your home...how tragic to lose everything you own and have worked so hard for. Am grateful to hear that everyone escaped.

By Linda R. Willborn (Lrwill) on Friday, January 27, 2006 - 11:33 pm:

What a shock to see this during my daily UP fix on the pasty cam. The Geis family are cousins and we share lots of great times up on the hill near Copper Falls. We had a chance to tour Fred's rennovations a few years ago and can't believe it is gone now. Fred's sister clued me in to check the mining gazette web page. As sad as this is, I now have this spectacular picture as my monitor background. So sorry, Fred
