There are many different ways to keep your driveway and/or path free of snow during the winter months in the U.P. Immediately coming to mind are a shovel, Silver Bear snow scoop, snowblower, or a plow such as this one pictured by Brita Haapala. They all have their own merits for the job, depending on how much snow has fallen, how much exercise you'd like to get and how long you'd like to be outdoors. But wait, take a closer look at this plow vehicle... shouldn't that fellow clear his windshield before he clears his driveway? :->

By Alan (Adams_aj) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 07:55 am:

Morning! Can't be without a 4wheel drive and plow!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 07:57 am:

Mary, that is so funny! I didn't even notice him sticking his head out of the window at first. That is so silly looking. I don't think I'd want to shovel that driveway though.

By anna swiniuchowski (Abswini) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 08:18 am:

yoopers must be born with the 'instinct' of how to drive and plow through the snow, therefore no need to clear the windshield!!!!

By lz (Llamamama) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 08:27 am:

That windshield looks like how half the troll drivers head out to work, only on interstates with many more vehicles! ;-)

By happyooper (Trigal) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 08:32 am:

Hey Brita, send him over to our place when he's done; our driveway could use a good plowing! :)

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 08:39 am:

Llamamama: I know what you mean!!! Scrape a circle in the windshield, a circle in the back window, drive 70 while putting on make-up or reading the paper!!!!! And they'll still have people passing them!!!! Insanity.

By Kelly Marshall (Kelly) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 08:53 am:

Ouch..He is also missing a plow light on the driver's side.

By JARMO ITÄNIEMI (Japei) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 09:02 am:

Hello Brita.. so beautiful picture!
How Yours baby now there .. he grow?!
Regards to all family.:)

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 09:40 am:

Llamamamma, we have drivers that drive with a snow covered or barely clean windshields too! Some of them usually end up talking with my husband at the auto collision repair shop that he manages by the end of the day.

By Jim Nicholas (Jimn) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 09:50 am:

I HEARD OF A WOMAN THAT WORKED NIGHTS,AND WHEN SHE GOT OUT IT HAD SNOWED. SHE CLEARED A SMALL SPOT ON HER WINDSHIELD AND TOOK OFF VERY FAST TO GET OUT OF THE LOT FIRST. TOTALED HER CAR IN THE LOT BY HITTING A CEMENT LIGHT POST. STRANGE.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 10:12 am:

That's the first thing I noticed -- that covered windshield! So funny.

Down here we often have heavy frosts that people don't want to clean off; it's really just as bad as snow, esp. if the sun is coming up!

By FJL (Langoman) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 10:31 am:

I assume he took that plow light off so it wouldn't obstruct his vision. :)

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 11:06 am:

Head light on the other side is missing too. I expect he's just trying to get some balance in life.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 11:12 am:

The best part is when he is done, unless he cleans off the windsheild in the street, he will have more snow on his driveway!

By anna swiniuchowski (Abswini) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 11:18 am:

it actually looks like his passenger side headlight is broken, so he has a plow light above it. He doesn't need a plow light on the driver's side because he has a headlight on the driver's side. Interesting mystery picture. Bet he wasn't expecting so much conversation about it.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 12:04 pm:

Well dere's a man for you :) His wife probably got all over him about going out and plowing the driveway...and she didn't say anything about him clearing the snow off the truck :)
Too funny about the missing plow light. One of the female officers I worked with, used to call cars with only one headlight 'pididdles'. Boring night on the department...and she'd be out on the road, protecting the citizens of Michigan from Pididdles :)

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 02:29 pm:

we even called them Pididdles way back in the 50's

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 02:48 pm:

Where does the word "Pididdles" come from?

By happyooper (Trigal) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 03:06 pm:

Cruising around with the gals when we were teens, we'd have a race to get pididdles. Two sharp raps, with our fingers, on the dash, one against the windshield and one more on the dash (or using the front seats and car ceiling if we were in the back). Whoever got it first won. Whoever got three in a row in one night, we'd say, had a date Saturday night. :)

By Jim Haralson (Jimattica) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 04:00 pm:

Have to ask, is that house at the North end of Front Street in Lake Linden? It looks like a house I used to know.

By Brita Haapala (Britach) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 04:04 pm:

No, the house is in Traprock. And the plow doesn't actually ever see the road. It's just for keeping the yard clean. :)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 04:07 pm:

Thanks Happyooper...I never knew where the term 'Pididdle' originated from...or that others even used the term, but right off the bat, you and Eddyfitz knew the word/term. Must be a Michigan thing, eh.

By happyooper (Trigal) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 04:35 pm:

Sur5er, I know what it means, but not where it came from. Maybe that's what people would say when they hit a deer and the light went out...? ;)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 06:05 pm:

In the late fifties and early sixties when you saw a pididle you got to kiss the girl if you were with one. When you were with your buddies you would hit them on the shoulder. This was in the Royal Oak area during the cruise days.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 07:21 pm:

Happyooper, Yah...that could be. "I'll be darn, a pididdle deer jumped in the middle of the pididdle street...and I didn't see the pididdle thing, until it was too darn pididdling late. Next thing you know, I hit the pididdle deer, and now I have only one pididdling headlight left. Oh pididdle!" :)

By 69 TOOT (Flyindamooney) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 08:57 pm:

When you saw a PeDiddle.....you got to kiss you girlfriend.....

I think global warming is showing in our lifetime. I remeber Tech from 65-69 and we had snow walls as high as our heads going into class and I was told 64 was the first year since the invention of the airplane where Superior froze completely over. Now shipping runs almost all year and the snow I see in Houghton is what I remember in the lower only a couple decades ago.

Could be banana trees growing in Bootjack in a few years.........

By Jim McEwan (Trolleyman) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 10:06 pm:

Down here in St Augustine Fl. we do not get snow or cold but, if we did we would call the guy in the bronco a Red Nick.

By Jim McEwan (Trolleyman) on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - 10:12 pm:

It looks like fun plowing snow like that but down here in St Augustine Fl we would call the guy running the plow a good old Redneck.

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 - 07:25 pm:

nice to see not much snow yet
