Brian and Shawn Malone took advantage of the 30° temps we've been treated to lately and went off exploring the shores of Lake Superior. Looks like they stumbled upon a hidden city of sorts. Just one of the amazing feats nature accomplishes to entertain us with the natural art mediums of sand, water and ice. Brian and Shawn described these shots in their Guest Gallery, like this: "When walking on the beach with unseasonably warm temps, we saw an interesting creation from the freeze, thaw cycle. Not expecting anything even remotely possible to photograph on such a gray, rainy, day, we came upon nature's way of creating a mini sandcastle village!"

Reminds me of a pueblo village under a looming mesa. Another great photo as usual! 45 and rain in the lower today, not much of a winter. I miss the bright snows of the north.

What a neat shot. Love the thought of a "sand village."

Hey it looks like the crowd waiting for the rain to stop under the stadium roof got a little wet and melty!

Only 4 posts today... everyone asleep?? The lake still isn't frozen... too warm a summer I guess.

These are too neat! I just told my niece a story using these photos, letting her find the little 'people' I talked about. What fun shots! :)

Anyone know where the sand village was spotted? Hard to believe you can still walk the beach in January! Would never have been possible when I went to Tech back in the 70's! There was always tons of snow from Thanksgiving on. Wouldn't mind taking a walk on a beach when I'm back next week!

Image was taken on a stretch of beach west of Sand River, near Alger County. Was so nice to be able to walk the beach and have my feet sink into the sand... as mentioned above, the shoreline is usually too obstructed with ice this time of year. Thought I might add, just got back from a walk around Presque Isle, in my running shoes, deepest snow encountered was a couple inches. This is January??? Lake is wide open, no signs of any ice.

Hope the no/little snow holds for another week! What I would give to sink my feet(boots!!) into some sand!!
