This icy explorer has appeared on the Pasty Cam in various ways, both in the water and now on the rocks, so to speak. Sarah Tyler snapped a shot of Nate Alwine, who along with friends, made a day hike to the Devil's Icebox located in the woods, northwest of Norway. This is actually a mining stope from the old Cyclops Mine and has been nicknamed the Devil's Icebox because it's said to be chilly there even in the summer. Impressive to see all the ice formations in Sarah's slideshow, but that 'chilly in summer' comment has me thinking about where I'm going to hike when heat reaches the 80's again next July and August ;>

Good Morning, nice pictures, but rather scary, I'd be afraid to fall off into the "drink".

I remember the 50 straight days of snow in the early 1950's as I was "contracted out" to another Hubbell resident for $3.00 a week to box scrape his looooong driveway. The man owned a auto parts place in Hancock.(of course it was a gravy job when we didnt get any snow for a week)

Isn't the Devil's IceBox on private property? I remember as a kid (I'm in my 50's) it was a tourist attraction. Then someone bought it and turned it into private property. Yes? I enjoyed the slide show! Congratulations on beautiful pictures throughout this week. elaine in cincinnati

Hey everyone, today is the good Capt's birthday. He might not like it if I told you his age, but he was born in 1974.
Help us remember Chet Wetton of Dollar Bay/ Bootjack, who passed away this week.
A dedication to a special man from his friends below the bridge...
Chet Wetton was a man full of vigor and zest
Everyone who knew him consider him the best
He had seen a lot in is hundred years
He would want us to remember him, but not shed tears
From watching him feed the chipmunks he considered friends
The limits of his knowledge knew no ends
From his stories of mines to those of ships
Or even during afternoon fishing trips
There was never a doubt form the start
That he would always have a special place in my heart.
Please check out some of Chet's picutes (with more to come) in "The Meerschaert Family" album under the Guest Gallery

Great pics Sarah...I can actually feel the cold air coming off the ice. Loved the slide show :)
Kenny, Sorry about the loss of your dear friend Chet. Amazing that he lived to be a hundred. One can only imagine the stories and history that he was able to share.

Reminds me of the gigantic icicles that formed on the edges of buildings downtown calumet, some grew to be at least 5 feet long. I was always warned not to walk under them.

Well, I was wondering where Toivo was. Good to hear from you again in this new year.
I imagine Nate Alwine is busy with other things right now, but it won't be long before all of you can be out tramping around the woods. Our kids started young--first in back packs, later on their own two feet. Sure enough, they still love to explore the UP.
Chet sounds like an amazing person. I'm sure he'd be honored by being commemorated in verse.

That's absolutely gorgeous but looks darn cold, especially since we're having temps in the 40's.
