Tom Cook was busy checking out two lighthouses located in Marquette County. The first one being the Big Bay Point, which is an active beacon, along with a bed and breakfast with seven guest rooms. Hiding under a shroud of falling snow in the second shot, is the Marquette Harbor Light, which is also an active lighthouse. It has been taken over by the Marquette Maritime Museum and is seasonally open to the public. For some inexplicable reason, they both have an air of romance around them, even when surrounded by winter white.

Lots and lots of fun memories running around the old Jacobsville lighthouse and sliding down the gorgeous banister when our grandparents weren't looking!!The banister was one thing looters didn't take when the light was decommissioned. Not a prettier spot on a snowy Christmas! Our last one in it was not that long ago, 2000. There definitely is something magical about the Lights!

Wonderful pictures, Tom! Lighthouse pics always make my day. I have been to Big Bay Lighthouse a few times, but never in the winter. What a beautiful sight. Thanks!

Beautiful pics of the lighthouses :) I love looking at the lighthouses, that grace the shores of Lake Superior.

Wow... I love the snowy lighthouse pic... it is avery calming picture! Snowing so heavily yet softly covering everything. Makes one wish for a warm fire and a good book! Sadly, I am heading north today for a funeral but happily looking forward to spending time with family again. My brother in law's father passed away on New Years Day. Rest peacefully Alfie Kemppainen, my memories of your gentle ways make me smile. ( I believe Alfie spent time at Still Waters off and on when he needed assisted care ) ... North I'm headin!

The Big Bay Lighthouse is a great place to visit any time of the year. If you go, keep an eye out for the friendly red fox. I made its acquaintance last Fall (2004) while looking at the big lake near the wood fence. The fox was also staring out at the lake, noticed me, came over to say hi, posed for a couple of pictures, and walked me back to my car.

Our children gave us a gift of a night at the Big Bay Lighthouse on our 40th anniversary. We sure had a good time and the innkeepers are very friendly. Also had a big breakfast there. Nice memories----

Great pictures Tom! I think Mary Drew's last sentence would be better stated with "especially when surrounded by winter white." : ) Have a great day everyone.

Hello from Mishawaka IN. One of my favorite things, lighthouses. What it must have been like to live in one of these magnificent buildings, so close to a large body of water, in a remote area. I can hear the wind blowing and the waves washing up on shore.

Good evening from Mishawaka, IN. Love the pictures of the lighthouses. My husband and I spent two nights at Big Bay a couple of years ago. What fun we had. Hired a guide to take us on a hike of waterfalls. Worth the money that's for sure. Also, taught us how to use a walking stick correctly.

Its so sad about the miners in W. Virginia. Let's hope and pray that the 13th miner found will survive.

Hey did anyone notice that a ghostly image appears on the upper photo?? AHHHH! Look at the fence. Find the green garden hose on the wall of the building just above it. See it??? Hose is the arms, bracket the head, fence posts the legs. What's going ON up there in Snow Land???
PS I moved to Hancock when I was six WEEKS old, and lived there until I was 5 or 6. I've always missed the UP, and finally went back two summers ago to find my old house exactly as it had been, right down to the wallpaper and kitchen floor- forty years later! Believe it or not, the current residents moved in a while after we moved out. They gave us a tour.
Now I'm in Ohio, and no one here knows what a Sno-Go is. And the snow melts! It's awful! It MELTS in the WINTER! AHHHHHHHHHH - The ghost above is ME !

Tom,

We trust you're a friendly ghost. Imagine a
house unrenovated for forty years!

Tom,

We trust you're a friendly ghost. Imagine a
house unrenovated for forty years! Maybe you
never really left...
