We’re getting a look today at the neighborhood Kestral around George C. Bailey’s place in Keweenaw County. His wife, Gail says it’s the guardian of their clotheslines. I’m not positive, but I think it’s an American Kestral, which is actually a small falcon, about the size of a Mourning Dove. Interesting little hunter.

George also shares a few of the shots he took of the Aurora Borealis over the Keweenaw last week. It was quite a display and actually seen far and wide this time if you were up in the wee hours of the morning. As you can see, it filled the skies right up!

Today’s video is from the New York Post and gives us a look at Aurora captured from above, in a timelapse taken of the moon setting. High above the Earth, NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick recorded this video of the moon setting into streams of red and green aurora. Now that’s something you don’t see every day!

Kestrals are great little birds - they have this amazing ability to hover when hunting mice, etc. The northern lights pictures are spectacular! Saw the vid last week and was amazed how it looked from space.

Hi
I wish my human eyes had seen colors like in those
photos. But from my beach outside of Cheboygan they
were just white; the movement and the pulsing made
it clear they were northern lights. It could be that
I was too far south to see colors, but I have seen
pictures taken even further south that did show
color.

The lights are so phenomenal. I want to see them
again...I was in Baraga too long....and lived
between the prison and the ••••••...WAY too much
light pollution to see anything there.

The guardian of the clothesline...I like that. I
had a Northern Shrike that hung out on
clotheslines
in B too....I also had a little mole that lived
under the building...and that Shrike had a bead on
him...he disappeared.....

Checking the post beforehand, Pasty won't allow
the name of the place you go to gamble all your
money away in slots, blackjack, etc.

Beautiful sights of birds and lights!
Eerie video. I was waiting for
Darth Vader to show up.
May the UP be with you.

Great pictures. I love birds and
who doesn't live the northern
lights.

Kathryn, I only see white with the
lights unless I have my camera.
That's where you see those
gorgeous colors.

Absolutely Beautiful!

Deb, Kathyrn,

You are correct that most cameras have sensitivities great enough that they pick up the colors before the naked eye does, but sometimes there are displays that are so bright the colors can be clearly seen, unaided.
