This past Friday about 9 a.m., George C. Bailey looked out his windows facing Lake Superior and saw two freighters, the Kay E. Barker and the John D. Leitch passing by their place within a half mile of the shore. He figured they could have literally waved to the crew members and they would have seen them waving. Now, that’s close and not something you see every day. I bet if it wasn’t windy, they’d have been able to hear their engines, too. They were sticking close to shore, as it was too rough and dangerous out further in the open waters. It actually doesn’t look bad where the freighters are, so that’s probably why they kept sailing. The Keweenaw was sheltering them from the heavy winds, I’m guessing.

George recorded a short video of them as they were slowly making their way by. You can hear the wind whipping around the camera microphone and I’m sure it must have been that much more out on Lake Superior. A number of freighters waited out the winds sheltered in bays around the coastline, too.

Nice pix, Mr. Bailey!
It looks like the Lake Superior Grand Prix
and George bought front row seats.
Who won, the hardship?

…and is that the bridge of a ship in
George’s yard in pix two and three?

These are great! Lucky George! There's definitely
been some awful winds. Nice for people like
George, though.

Fantastic pics George!! Holy Smokes, In all my
years up there on 26, I don't think I've ever seen
freighter's that close to shore. There's some
pretty good rock cropping's below the water line
along the north shore. Obviously, they must be far
enough out, I'm sure they know that tho, lol!!

George, it's too bad you have such a crummy view
from your deck!! Just kidding... absolutely
beautiful. I'm trying to picture your place in my
mind, I'll have to pay more attention next time
passing thru. Thanks for sharing your pics &
video!

Alex...if you're asking about the green building, that is George and his wife Gail's gift shop, Eagle Rock Studio.

Thanks for the link Mary. It’s a lot clearer
when the sun is shining.
