Jeff Dennis, along with his wife, Chris and their four-legged kid, Fritz, headed UP to Bete Grise last week when a storm was brewing to snap a few photos of the two freighters that had taken refuge there while the storm was blowing. I’m not sure which freighters these are, but I’m guessing one of our many “boat nerds” will be able to identify them for us. I think it says Joseph L. Block on the one that’s closer to shore, but I have no clue on the one farther out. I’m always thankful to hear that the freighters out on Lake Superior now take refuge in a safe bay like this along the shoreline of Superior. We certainly don’t need a repeat of the tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald. With the wind blowing like it was this day, the windchill was quite frigid. Good thing Chris and Fritz are both bundled up against the cold.

Jeff also recorded a video “short” of the two boats in Bete Grise. The Big Lake looks pretty calm from there, but you can bet with the wind whipping around out in the open waters, the waves would be building and make passage a rough one if the freighters stayed out there.

Sweet pix and video! It’s nice to know that
those behemoths have a safe place to go.
And Freighters and Fritz sounds like the
special on today’s menu.

Always good to see the big ships waiting out the winds like that. Nice video too.
The Sunset Bay webcam view looks really pretty this morning with the snow-covered beach. A beaut!

This will go to my boat nerd friend.

Once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you
made it through, how you managed to survive…But one
thing is certain. When you come out of the storm,
you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s
what this storm’s all about.

Very cool pictures and video. It is so nice that
these ships have a safe place to wait out the
storms. And nice to know when the storms are
coming so they can be ready for them.
