Sally Beaudette spotted the first deer for the winter season, crossing the ice near their home in Bootjack recently. She said she does worry about them going through the ice if it’s not too thick yet or if they hit a patch of open water, but those she’s spotted so far, have made it across safely. Then she said a night or two later, her son called and told her to look out the window in the early evening and there they were, a couple under her trees having found something to eat there.
The video Sally made, shows two deer trotting across the ice right in front of their place. Looks like maybe a doe and a small one following her. It doesn’t look like they’re slipping and sliding on the ice like I would be if I was running like that. Their hooves must be like cleats on the ice.

We used to watch the deer cross the lake like that - a dozen or more in single file! Glad these made it safely and didn't go thru the ice like the elk did in Otsego County last week.

Had to be so much fun catching them like this. I, too, would have been worried about them going through. Because as much as I love deer, I don't think I'd want to try to save them. It would be a dilemma for sure. Glad they all made it safely. Cool that they came after dusk like that to eat.
Nice sprint! They should try a pair of Deer Stags.

I watched a Nature show yesterday about reindeer and how they change for winter. Their hooves change, the pads "shrink" so they have hooves to hit and dig with. Perhaps something like that happens with the deer too....I'd love watching that.
