In case you haven’t noticed, Lake Superior’s shores are ever changing with the seasons. The wintry weather doesn’t keep Judy Byykkonen away though...she still makes Calumet Waterworks Park (a.k.a Bucky’s) a regular spot to get away from it all and snap photos to share. This visit found the shoreline to be windswept and coated with ice and snow. It’s neat how the snow accumulates around the rocks on the shore and coated the thick ice on the branches of the bush in her third shot. But Judy is always looking for details and she found some interesting grasses, leaves and weeds still peeking out of the snow that otherwise might just get passed right by. That last shot would make a great canvas to hang on the wall.

Once again Steve Brimm brings us 20 Seconds of Solace, this time during one of the snowy days at Copper Harbor. You can hear the wind and see the snow swirling around and not have to worry about cold hands or ears. Check out Steve’s online studio here: Steve Brimm Studio. If you need a last minute gift, you may still be able to purchase a gift card!

As always, Judy's pictures make you feel as
if you're there. Beautiful pictures.

Loved Steve's video too. On the right,
there's a small boatlift with movement
underneath. I couldn't tell if there was
something under it or if it was waves
bouncing off. It was interesting anyway.

Deb - that's actually a boat house. I think what you
are seeing is just the waves bouncing off. The
island is called Duck Island and has been in my
family since the early 1950's when my Grandfather
bought it. My cousin owns it now. Spent many
summer vacations there! I'm going to have to pull
out the old pictures and share. :)

Ahh Duck Island! I owned a log cabin just across
the water from this boat house and lodge on the
island. A very quaint peaceful spot! Sure miss it!!

Nice ice! I don't think it's waves as the wind is
blowing towards us and not towards the structure.
Either that or light reflection caused by the
blazing hot sun that day.

By Dianne Miller (Tutu) on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 - 01:01 am:

Greta - did you know my Grandparents (Bonde) or any
of the rest of the family? My cousins know a lot
more of the people and history of Copper Harbor from
back in the days than I do. I miss it a lot too.
Haven't been back UP since a snowmobile trip with my
husband back in 2008. Used to rock hunt all around
the island when I was a kid. Remember the A & W?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 - 08:35 am:

I remember the A & W. I remember the summer
going up there and it was a gas station or
something. I was so disappointed because I
loved to go to the A & W.

Does anybody know if that B & B is
operational up there, right across from the
Devil's Washtub area? It's such a beautiful
place but there are never any cars there.
We stopped there once a few years back but
nobody answered the door.

I still can't tell what's going on at that
boathouse in the video. It doesn't make
sense that it would be waves when there
aren't many in the rest of the lake

Looks like to me that maybe there is some tar paper
or some other type of sheathing on the side that is
loose and rippling in the wind.
