Three different photographers captured shots of the T/S State of Michigan ship while it was in the Keweenaw area recently. We start with a photo taken by Jeff Dennis as it sailed along the Portage Canal, then a shot snapped by Courtney Holzberger as the ship was underway near White City at the Lower Entry to the Portage and finally a shot from Judy Byykkonen as the State of Michigan headed into Lake Superior at the Upper Entry near McLain State Park.
The T/S State of Michigan is a 224 foot former Navy submarine surveillance ship that the Navy decided to decommission and was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard. At first its primary use was drug intercepting, but was eventually changed into the Great Lakes Maritime Academy floating classroom, where students spend about 75 days aboard the ship as part of a four year college program. On board students can earn a bachelors degree and merchant marine credentials. How’s that for a college experience?
Courtney Holzberger also recorded a short video of the State of Michigan as it sailed by the breakwall at White City, complete with a salute to those on land.

Nice selection of views of the State of Michigan, and interesting history for that vessel. Thanks everyone!
Just saw where Mount Horace Greeley was purchased by a group of Michigan Tech alumni. It would be great if they could transform the site into something useful!
