The Heikinpäivä festivities took place this past weekend in Hancock. We start a look at those activities with a couple shots from the archive, beginning with one from Z-Man, snapped back in 2009. He captured this young man taking the plunge in the Polar Bear Dive. This event was actually canceled this year, due to the frigid below zero temps and wind chills.

Daryl Laitila (RIP) was on hand in 2010 for the Heikinpäivä parade, where she captured a shot of a Finnish Porta Potty as it drove on by. That patron in the “john” didn’t even have time to take his snowshoes off.

We have a video from this year’s Wife Carrying Contest, that was published by Keweenaw Report. I didn’t realize the contestants had to do a bit more than just carry the wife, check it out!
