Our first archive shot today, was taken by Chris Little in 2005. That’s the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. showing plainly what necessitates the winter season lay-up taken by the freighters that traverse the waters of the Great Lakes. There was plenty of ice surrounding the McCarthy back then.
Joy Ziemnick snapped a photo of similar ice, often called pancake ice, back in 2017. She captured this one in the Keweenaw where the sun was shining brightly that day.
Our current photo was taken by Jim Solko and that’s his wife, Brenda Leigh standing on that ledge with Lake Superior’s front yard, Monocle and Spectacle in back yard along with all the hills. This spot is Mission Hill, which is also called Spectacle Lake Lookout. On the right side of the photo, you can see a freighter making it’s way on the Big Lake.
Frances Czapski made today’s video of the Paul R. Tregurtha as it was passing by Whitefish Point. The video was shared on Whitefish Point Michigan’s Facebook page.

Have you noticed, too many people are like porcupines--they have their good points but you can't get near them.
