Back in 2004, Charlie Hopper had to climb the tower on the Calumet, Laurium, Keweenaw VFW property (formerly the DNR building), so he snapped a vista looking north from Calumet on US-41. The view goes on for miles.

Then in 2008, Rod Burdick was on hand in Marquette at the Lower Shiras Harbor Dock, watching the Kaye E. Barker unloading her cargo before heading back out on Lake Superior.

Fred Koski was at King’s Lake in Baraga County back in 2015, where it looks like winter hadn’t quite arrived yet that year. The rays shining through the clouds makes for a great shot.

Our current photo comes to us from Brenda Leigh, taken in the Kinross area near Sault Ste. Marie. This is the view that her late brother, Chuck (RIP) enjoyed from his home there and Brenda still goes to enjoy at times. She said the tire swing was calling to her, but her feet were already wet from traipsing through the snow to snap the photo.

We’re getting a virtual (time-lapse) ride aboard the Algoma Sault as it arrives in Hancock last month, I’m assuming to deliver road salt. Larry Sherwood posted this video and said, ““One of the biggest challenges of my career so far. What a beautiful part of the USA...”. Interesting that it turns around part way down the canal and then backs the rest of the way to the dock.

Great video. Was expecting that the Algoma would go beneath the lift bridge but looks like it placed its cargo just before it.

That must have been an impressive arrival of the Algoma Sault. She turned around a few miles out at the island near Schmidt Corner and came in BACKWARDS the rest of the way.

This vessel is almost brand new having been christened earlier this year after construction in China.

Some forty years ago I was very fortunate to have spent an extended weekend on one her very similar sister ships, the Algoma Enterprise (Canadian Enterprise back then). I'll never forget the experience. I just wish I could find the photos I took.

Way cool video! The captain makes that backwards turn look a whole lot easier than when I do the same into my driveway!
