Today’s first archive shot is a different kind of scene from Dan Urbanski’s usual photographs. When Dan posted this “grazing cows” photo back in 2001, he added the following note: “This reminds me of prints of paintings that were popular in the early 1900's. This view was on the Greenland Road (M38). It is on the Wilbur Ranch, which is a place that provides many marvelous scenes, including huge flocks of geese and brilliant yellow acres of mustard and trefoil in the spring.” RIP Dan, we miss you’re photographic talents.
The next photo was taken in 2014 of a common shot once winter arrives here in the Copper Country. That’s 5th Street in Calumet, where the village crew plows all the accumulated snow into one long berm down the middle of the street, then they come along with the snow blower and dump trucks to remove it. It is quite the operation and I'm always amazed at that pile of snow dividing the highway in two like that.
Then in 2016, we have a snowless shot taken by Jim Solko of his wife, Brenda Leigh picking wild cranberries in the Brimley area. That’s one thing I’ve never picked and truly wouldn’t know where to begin to look for them either, but I bet they make a scrumptious cranberry sauce.
Our current photo for today takes us back to 5th Street in Calumet once again, but just this past week after the big storm dumped on the Keweenaw. The Calumet Village crew was out making their usual berms down the middle of the street and then clearing them away with their snow removal technique. You get to watch it live also, thanks to the great camera work of the folks at Copper World. Make sure you check out their Facebook page for ideas for great U.P. Christmas gifts this year. Have to give it to Calumet ~ they stay on top of the
street conditions and do an excellent job of snow
removal.
There will be plenty of snow for sledders over the
long holiday weekend!

Whoa, man...that's a lot of snow, man!
And what a contrast between 2001 and 2018.
