Here we go again, with several wintry days and fall again in the archive on this day. We start out with a shot of Elmo’s tower on the cliff in Phoenix. Charlie Hopper snapped this one back in 2000, when he noted that passing that spot this day, the hillside looked sugar coated with snow. With the backdrop of the clouds and blue sky, it’s quite the striking scene.
The next photo was taken by Daryl Laitila (RIP) back in 2002. She gives us a glimpse of Fort Wilkins married enlisted soldier’s housing, just outside the Fort walls. I cannot imagine having served at this post in the winters during the mid 1800’s when this was a remote military outpost without modern roads or vehicles to get around. The winters must have seemed much longer with that kind of isolation.
In 2011, John Sturos was taking some of his young hunters out, decked out in blaze orange and ready to practice the hunter safety they’ve been taught. It is opening day of deer season here UP North and I’m sure the snowcover we have today is quite pleasing to all the hunters. Good luck to all the hunters (and the deer, too!). Make sure you know your target and what is beyond, before you pull the trigger.
Melanie Hakala Rossi took today’s current photo, while out on her snowshoe adventure. With the fall leaves in the water and the snowy edges to the little pond, it made me think of how fall and winter combined together in a hurry here in the Keweenaw this year. The reflection of the bare trees reminds us that it wasn’t that long ago the leaves were on those branches.
I’m not sure what percentage of our viewers are snowshoers, but for those that aren’t and have been wondering how to get started, we have for you some basics on how to snowshoe...

Nice pix and the video looks like fun, but I'd be on my bee-hind the first step.

It was a great Opening Day down in the tip of the
mitt. The Mancelona Buck Pole has 27 nice bucks
tonight. Hope all the hunters have a safe and
successful season!
