Veteran sells Houghton-Douglass Falls property for
DNR scenic site
By Mariah Powell
CALUMET, Mich. (WLUC) - Houghton County is getting
a new public scenic site dedicated to veterans.
"I'm overwhelmed by the response here today. I
wasn't expecting this turnout. I'm glad it
happened,” said local Vietnam Veteran Jim
Kuusisto.
Kuusisto has pledged 70 acres to honor his fellow
veterans. The property between Calumet and Lake
Linden includes Houghton-Douglass Falls.
"My parents bought it in 1949. I basically grew up
there. So it has been a part of me my whole life
and it has been very important to me to keep it as
pristine as possible," said Kuusisto.
Kuusisto is selling the property to the Department
of Natural Resources for $300,000. The DNR and
Kuusisto held a ceremonial document signing at the
Calumet Colosseum.
"The DNR process is signed off and now the real
estate process continues. So, the site isn't
actually open to the public yet. We are still
working through the details, but it is still an
important step in the process that we wanted to
celebrate," said DNR U.P. regional coordinator
Stacy Haughey.
Friends and family, local VFW and ROTC as well as
political figures attended the ceremony to thank
Kuusisto for his contribution.
"We're so proud of Jim and Jo to be able to do
this for the state of Michigan and to have this in
a memorial forever for our fallen, for our Vietnam
vets and all of our heroes out there," said 110th
District Representative Scott Dianda (D).
The DNR will have an official dedication ceremony
when the scenic site opens to the public.
