We’re starting out our archive review in a Grand way today... with a photo snapped back in 2002 by James Niskanen over on Mackinac Island. In case you didn’t know, that’s the Grand Hotel with flags flying across the front of the longest porch in the world at 660 feet. Pretty impressive.
Our next shot was taken by Greg Burk in 2008, when he was hiking around what he called the “Hancock Bluffs”. He spotted a bank of fog just rolling in on the Portage Canal and before you know it, the whole waterway was engulfed, along with the Lift Bridge, too.
It looks like Riley Davis was in just about the same vicinity in 2009, when he took the third photo of his girlfriend, Karen atop an old piece of equipment near the Quincy Mine Shaft. I don’t think OSHA would approve since Karen probably should have had her hardhat on driving around a mining site like that.
Today’s video from the Keweenaw National Historical Park (made in fall of 2015), tells the rest of the story about the fog engulfing the Portage Canal.

Bob is seeing all these beautiful views on his tour across the UP this week on his H.D. Low Rider. Today he will be riding from Mohawk to Manistique then onto the Soo.
