Today’s archive choices and the current photo don’t have a lot in common, just scenes from around the U.P. that many folks enjoy visiting and seeing. We start the set with a photo from our own, Jon Hopper taken in 2000. He was in South Range when the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Moving Wall made a visit there and captured these men in uniform checking it out. The reflection adds so much more to the photo.

Five years later, in 2005, we join Robert C. Wetton (RIP) in Lake Linden at the Houghton County Historical Museum to watch the Lake Linden & Torch Lake Railroad Old #3 chug across the new (at that time) trestle. The addition completed the railroad, so it could make a circle around the Museum campus.

Moving ahead another five years, to 2010, we head to Marquette to watch the Kaye E. Barker as she enters the Lower Harbor there. What a sight to see these big boats closer up, you realize just how big they really are when you’re viewing them in person.

Our current photo today was snapped by Tim Bersos who was recently in the Keweenaw and took this beauty of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge shining brightly at night. All the surrounding lights reflecting in the water make the scene just glow.

For all our Boatnerd viewers, we have a drone video of the Kaye E. Barker leaving the Marquette Lower Harbor, with nice views of the breakwall light and looking back toward Marquette, too. Happy Sailing!

What a phenomenal video! Drone operators are definitely mastering their craft. Hat's off to the filmmaker.

I second that Alex. I think I could see the Helmsman waving at us. I'm still hoping to get UP this year.

I can feel the enchantment of the little boy in 2003.

2003...I hear that, D.A. We were there once upon a time.

I was not much older than him when I created 2 vivid memories of learning about running water outside.

One was chopping up big ice dams in our driveway with my Dad so the backed up water would flow.

In the other I was alone. Somehow I discovered that a running garden hose could be pushed into the ground and it would dig it's own hole. The sandy soil right outside our back door eventually "ate" the entire garden hose of probably 50 feet. I don't remember any punishment, I think because my Dad was so amazed after he tried to pull it out. He just dug down a ways, cut it off and buried it and probably said, "Don't ever do that again."

Love the pictures and videos for today.
We've been spending the weekend watching
ships come and go from the Duluth harbor.
It's been a beautiful Labor Day weekend
here. The weather's been great. We even
got in the lake. Hate to go home. We're
sitting here waiting for the Michipicoten
to depart. It arrived earlier today.
