It’s fun to see all the unusual things people come across in their travels around the U.P., that’s what we’re checking out in the archives and current photo today. Back in 2002, Jon Jacobson spotted this masterpiece of automotive art while passing through L’Anse. It was at a little gas station off the main road. That’s quite a collection from all over the country.
Driving around the streets of Kearsarge back in 2012, I spotted Washington D.C. in someone’s backyard and had to stop to snap a photo. These are birdhouses that Paul Lehto built and he had quite a collection of houses depicting local businesses and historical buildings, too. You can check out this day back then by clicking here: Aug. 21,2012.
The next unusual stop is in Ishpeming, with Laurie Bashaw and her grandsons, back in 2013. Da Tourist Trap has all kinds of things to explore outside their store, which the boys enjoyed. They’re in front of the “Deer Camp” in this photo.
That brings us to our current photo for today. Jeff Dennis and his family went on an adventure last week. They trailered their Ranger to Harvey, near Marquette and headed out for an all day ride, exploring places along the way. The photo Jeff shared here, is from Lakenenland Sculpture Park near Marquette. They drove on several connecting trails and railroad grades, but the biggest part of the day was on the Haywire Trail, which goes from Shingleton to Manistique. Jeff added that the Lake Superior Railroad (AKA the Haywire) had Lake Michigan ferry service from Manistique to connections with the Ann Arbor Railroad in Lower Michigan and that he has heard that when this railroad pulled up spikes, it became Michigan’s first official Rail-Trail.
Jeff and company take us along for the ride in today’s video, where you’ll get to see more of Lakenenland, the Haywire Trail, a Lighthouse and more. Enjoy the ride!

Greetings:
Lakenenland is East out of Marquette a few miles along M-28. We have been there often and each year a few new exhibits are added, but it is the political commentary of the artist that is worth the visit.
Lakenenland is free and on rainy days you can drive past the artwork. Perhaps, adds about an hour to any trip to stop in.
4-wheels...now that's something I can do. Retirement perhaps.

That video is beyond awesome....The Dennis family IS a family...I love it!
Lakenenland is fabulous....Cindy Lou took me for a spin through there last September....what a fabulous stop...it is free, but they accept donations...and you can't help but donate after a ride through there! It's truly amazing. Go if you can...don't miss it!!
