There are things you know you’ll see when you visit the Copper Country, but then there are some things you don’t expect that you come across, too. Today’s archive shots are a few of those things. Starting in 2001, Charlie Hopper was on hand at the Calumet Theatre when the Tamburitzan Dancers came to perform there. He said the music, the costumes, the laughs, the energy... it was definitely an evening to remember. They visited a number of times, since then, too.
In Lake Linden, you’ll find the Lady Be Good Propeller in front of City Hall. Z-Man stopped and snapped a photo of it back in 2003. It is from a four engine B-24 Liberator Bomber that crashed in the Libyan Desert in April 1943 and was not discovered until May 1959. The propeller has been on loan to Lake Linden from the USAF Museum since May of 1970. One of the crew members who died in the crash was from Lake Linden, T/Sgt Robert E. LaMotte, Radio Operator.
The 2011 archive photo was taken by Lisa Normand, while up on the tip of the Keweenaw at High Rock Bay. A Tall Ship was making its way between Manitou Island and High Rock Bay. What a sight to see, with all the sails unfurled and working with the wind to move that ship right along in Lake Superior's waters.
Just in case you’ve never heard of the Tamburitzans, our video feature will fill you in on what Being a Tamburitzan is all about and how these young people have the time of their lives, while earning a college degree.
