A set of twins start off our animal review in the archives today. Ray Laakaniemi made a visit to the Iron County Historical Museum back in 2008 and he found a couple of music loving fawns that were there to check out the historical home of Carrie Jacobs Bond, a composer and the first American woman to succeed in a career writing popular songs. Probably her best known song is “I Love You Truly”.
We catch up with Fred Koski back in 2009, for some in the air action of a Harrier Hawk chasing a young Eagle in flight. Never fear though, Fred said the Eagle got away!
Fred Koski also snapped the photo from 2012, a Pileated Woodpecker doing what he does best, looking for a dinner consisting of carpenter ants, their main source of nourishment, along with other insects. They also eat wild fruits and nuts to round out their diet. Feels like you could reach out and touch this one.
Another big bird was photographed by Melody Provost Holmes recently, sitting at the top of a dead tree, just surveying the surroundings and keeping an Eagle eye on all that’s taking place. Actually it was probably looking for something it could grab for dinner.
Our video is a treat today for sure. It shows two Pileated Woodpeckers doing what looks like a dance around a Jackpine tree. At times they are so in unison, it almost looks like a mirror image of each other. Pretty neat!
