Looking through today’s archive photos, what caught my attention were the sky shots. In 2004, Kevin Vrsek stopped at the viewing platform of the Sturgeon River Slough and snapped the first photo. With the green expanse before you, you barely notice the clear blue sky, with not a cloud in sight. Beautiful!
The sky was brightened one morning in 2006 and David Woon captured it... an early morning rainbow that seems to be shooting out of Lake Superior. Look closely and you’ll see that it’s actually a double, with the second one just a faint light near the Big Lake.
Then in 2010, Melanie Hakala Rossi caught the sun setting at McLain State Park, with the sun still up in the clouds and streaking down from them. Look how bright the sun still is in the opening in the clouds. We’re lucky when scenes like this are captured, since they quickly change and disappear otherwise.
Joy Ziemnick caught another moment like I described above here, this past Sunday evening. Clouds were on the horizon while the sun was setting and she quickly snapped this shot. Joy thought the cloud in the middle looked like a dog. I’d have to agree with her on that one. Again, the sun behind the clouds is lighting up the border of the clouds, making them shine.
Later Sunday night, a lightning storm shot across the skies in the Keweenaw and Cathy McKenzie captured it on video. She said that the storm was to the north and displayed some pretty cool lightning for quite a while. There was no loud thunder, though, just an occasional faint rumble and no rain, either. Enjoy the show!

We watched that storm Sunday night from Bucky's for quite some time. Didn't get any pics, but definitely a light show...
