It’s a lighthouse kind of day, both in the archives and in our current photo and video. We go back to 2013 for a trio of beacons snapped by Philip Odum. He started out on the eastern end of the U.P., 14 miles west of Whitefish Point, at the Crisp Point Lighthouse. It’s one of the more photogenic lighthouses, I think.

Then Philip headed west and stopped in Big Bay, which is 24 miles northwest of Marquette. There he photographed the Big Bay Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. The views of Lake Superior are outstanding from this high rocky point. I think it would be a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, slow down the pace and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Philip’s last lighthouse is here in the Keweenaw at Eagle Harbor. It’s always worth a stop there, not only for the views of the Big Lake, but also the added bonus of the museums on the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse campus. There’s a Maritime Museum, a Keweenaw History Museum and a Commercial Fishing Museum all there for your history learning pleasure.

The current photo today, was taken by Jeff Dennis, after a hike in to check out this lighthouse in the Ontonagon area. Jeff and his family hiked in to this abandoned Fourteen Mile Point Lighthouse. There are no decent roads to this light, so they walked along the shoreline, which was wet and slippery in places and ended up being what he figures was about a 10 mile walk. They had been talking about taking this hike for about 20 years, so they were happy to have finally made it.

Jeff also made a video of the walk there, around the grounds of the Lighthouse and the way back, too, so you can get a better idea of what type of hiking it is and you can be prepared if you should decide to try getting there yourself. Good luck if you do!

What great memories for Jeff and his family.
Wonderful adventure! Thanks for sharing for
those of
us who'll never make it there.

Um... Sure, UC! What a great remote
today. I love it!

JBuck?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, August 2, 2018 - 09:49 pm:

I think UC has our number Deb!! ;-)

Mary featured my 2 favorite lighthouses. And i
always wanted to hike to Fourteen Mile Point
Lighthouse but doesn't look like that will ever
happen, so the video is great!

Hey Deb, how is Mr. Deb doing these days?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, August 2, 2018 - 10:01 pm:

You know, watching that video of the hike again,
maybe if you took kayaks and stayed right along the
shore it would have been easier. If the Lake kicked
up you could always ditch them and hike!

I didn't even notice that my phone thinks
it's smarter than I am and changed review
to remote earlier. Hmmm

Yeah, JBuck, UC definitely has our
numbers. We are in the Copper Country for
a few days. So I don't think Mr Deb's
knee is quite as bad. We can't do a whole
lot but will hopefully be able to next
year. He returns to the doctor when we
get back. Sure hope he gets good news
soon.
