The archive is traveling from North to South today, starting with a classic shot from Dotty Kinnun. It’s probably one of the most photographed scenes in Copper Harbor, from the lighthouse lookout. When Dotty shared the photo back in 2001, she commented that it is such a photogenic place. I totally agree.
In 2009, Chad Johnson was on hand with his camera to snap a photo of the renovation of the Lake Linden-Hubbell High School auditorium windows. They were removing the old glass block windows and replacing them with large pane windows, which actually is the type of windows the building had back in the 1930’s. So the new windows are actually the old windows.
I never tire of seeing the main street on Mackinac Island, it actually makes me kind of lonesome for this unique U.P. Island. Sherri Juntikka was over there in 2015 when she snapped this shot that shows the hotels, shops and modes of transportation on this great place to spend a day, a week or even the summer. It’s definitely a simpler way of life with no cars to get you from point a, to point b. Only horse drawn taxis or pedal bikes to get you around and not a stoplight in sight.
Speaking of stoplights, Mary Schmitt captured a photo of the new stoplight in Lake Linden! What’s next? Maybe a roundabout as you come into town? Before you get your pasties in an uproar, hold on...this is just a temporary traffic light while repairs were being made to the highway, earlier this week. It struck Mary as kind of funny, as it did me, too, when I saw her photo. You can also see the completed window job on the LLHHS school in this shot.
We’re going back to Mackinac Island for today’s video feature. UP North Live published this video in 2012, of TV 7 & 4 sharing the history of Mackinac Island with Arielle Berlin. It’s just over four minutes long, but it will be time well spent, learning the history of this unique Upper Michigan Treasure.

Oh how I always enjoy the pictures from
Mackinac Island. I really have to get
back there. Such a fun place to visit.
Love the Copper Harbor lighthouse too.
And of course, I always enjoy seeing my
old high school. I've seen a few
documentaries of the history of Mackinac
Island. It's always fun to watch.

Every time I see a picture of Mackinac Island I get an overwhelming feeling of wanting to be there.

I'm by no means a great romantic but it is that feeling of "being there" or "belonging there" that caused me to fall deeply in love with the movie "Somewhere in Time."
