We’re starting out the Pasty Cam today, with a view over Union Bay in Silver City, taken by Dan Urbanski back in 2001. He captured a small thunderhead just before sunset, making it perfect timing for a rainbow to make an appearance.
Sue Hill was doing a bit of sailing back in 2003, getting ready to go through after the swing bridge opens up there in Ontonagon. This bridge was actually replaced in 2006, but if you’d like to read more about this historic bridge, check out the following link: Ontonagon Steel Swing Span Bridge.
We join Marilynn Bachorik in Munising for a look at the American Mariner docked at the paper mill in the little harbor at Bayshore Park. Marilynn commented back in 2014 when this photo first appeared on the Pasty Cam, that she loved how the Munising hills frame the freighters when docked there.
Our current photo for today, comes from Cindy Conway who was here in the U.P. recently for a vacation. They stopped at the Soo Locks and were able to catch the 1000 foot Edwin H. Gott as it was going through the Locks. Cindy said it was quite amazing to be alongside a boat that big.
If you’ve ever wondered just how do the Soo Lock systems work, wonder no more. Click on today’s video published by the National Post, with Allan Frappier, Chief of Lock Operations at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Dan Urbanski sure had an eye...his pictures live on...
The Soo Locks vid is pretty cool...and I believe they are talking about it's replacement!

I love Dan's picture. It's absolutely gorgeous. The Soo locks are fascinating. I talked somebody I know from out here in Minnesota to go there on vacation this year. Their family was so excited to go because they wanted someplace besides Duluth to watch freighters. I suggested that and all if the other amazing places Eastern Upper Michigan. I brought them all kinds of info back from the Ironwood rest center. I know they'll have a great time.

Munising …
Every time I hear that name, I think of an open amphitheater, like the Hollywood Bowl …
… where all the local townfolk gather for a "Muni-sing"! That sounds so much like a small town Yooper thing to do.
But in all the times I've been there, I never found it! 😕

I couldn't tell from the original article whether there were still any Red Owl stores! Apparently this really is the "Sole Survivor".

Dennis and I had just moved to Munising a few months before I took the picture of the Mariner in the Bay. It was the first time we saw a freighter pull in, and we were so surprised. We've been here 5 years now and love it more than ever as we continue to discover more and more about this beautiful area.
